Only one EU country is regularly receiving Russian gas

With three of the four pipelines supplying Russian natural gas to Europe out of service, Hungary is now the only EU member state that still receives Russian gas, writes F orbes Hungary . There are four pipelines that could supply Russian natural gas to Europe:

  • Nord Stream 1, with a capacity of 55 billion cubic meters (bcm) per year (whose deliveries have been interrupted by Russia);
  • Nord Stream 2, with an identical capacity of 55 billion cubic meters (this never became operational after the German government refused to approve it following Russia's invasion of Ukraine).
  • Yamal Europe, the longest gas pipeline (4,107 kilometers) supplies gas from the Yamal Peninsula in western Siberia and ends in Germany, with a capacity of 33 billion cubic meters. Deliveries were stopped from Russia in May.
  • Turk Stream, which transports gas from Russia under the Black Sea and across the Balkans, has a capacity of 31.5 billion cubic meters and is the only gas pipeline still in operation. It ends in Hungary, which means that at the moment Hungary is the only EU Member State to still receive Russian natural gas.

Due to Russia's huge gains from soaring gas prices, coupled with the massive curtailment of other trade with Europe, Russia has no interest in shutting down these pipelines completely. Although Hungary still receives the gas, its price is linked to market prices, so the country is strongly opposed to any further sanctions against Russia.

Earlier this week, Prime Minister Viktor Orbán announced a national consultation on EU sanctions against Russia, asking citizens whether or not they are in favor of the sanctions.

The Hungarian government has loudly opposed many of the sanctions imposed on Russia, arguing that they harm Europeans more than Russians.

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán has called for an end to Russian sanctions by the end of the year to stop inflation, halve food prices and keep the surge in energy costs in check.
