Peaceful summer for the “Competent”, perhaps, but not for millions of Italians

"Summer is already peaceful and we want it to remain so", said Prime Minister Draghi during the press conference last Thursday after the Council of Ministers, which had just approved the new anti- Covid decree. Among the novelties, as known, the compulsory Green Pass from 6 August for access to a whole series of activities and public places, the extension of the state of emergency until 31 December and new criteria for determining the colors of the Regions ( the yellow zone will be triggered at 10 per cent of the intensive care units occupied).

In short, despite the sharp reduction in hospitalizations in recent weeks, and the progress of the vaccination campaign (almost 30 million Italians have already completed the cycle), the government's line does not reveal any signs of freedom. If on the other side of the Channel the “free all” has already begun on July 19, in Italy we remain anchored to new closures, new obligations and still stringent parameters.

Yet, President Draghi is not entirely wrong: for the "government of the best" the summer is truly peaceful. Think of Minister Speranza, for example. After praising the yellow-red Executive in his book, which was then promptly withdrawn, he was reconfirmed in the team of Prime Minister Draghi and finds himself, after numerous mistakes and slips, to preside today one of the most important ministries, custodian of Italian freedoms. Or, think of the Minister of Justice Cartabia, who in a few months could go from Keeper to the first woman to fill the role of President of the Republic. In short, we have no doubts: our politicians are very calm.

In spite of everything, could we say the same thing for an owner of a nightclub that has been closed for over a year? Or for the organizers of major events? For deejays ? For restaurateurs who will have to watch as policemen asking each customer for the Green Pass ? Maybe it won't be the same for them. And the climate of fear, indecision and uncertainty that the current government reveals certainly does not help.

In the opinion of the writer, a summer with a mask, spacing, Green Pass, limited capacities for major events, cannot be defined as “serene”. Indeed, it shows further evidence of the disconnection from the reality of the Italian political class.

To corroborate these theses, a few hours before the press conference of Prime Minister Draghi, the Speaker of the Chamber, Roberto Fico, intervened: “I do not feel close to the positions of those who say here you can only enter with the Green Pass . It is not possible to ask who is vaccinated and who is not, it is a question that does not exist ”.

In short, if it is not possible to ask for a certificate of vaccination for deputies and senators, how could a waiter or the owner of a bar on a Saturday night, with hundreds of people in succession? The problem does not seem to be taken into consideration.

And again, during the press conference, Prime Minister Draghi explained that "the Green Pass guarantees that you will find yourself among people who are not contagious". So why did the president ask reporters to swab, even though everyone had already completed the vaccination course?

Summer was supposed to bring us a wave of optimism, reassurance and a courageous restart. The government seems to have taken the opposite path: that of restrictions, of emergency, of indecision. In short, fear – once again – won over hope.
