For freelance journalists

Amount: € 5,000

Eligible: freelance journalists; groups of freelance journalists

Goal: To help local community-based, community-driven media engage communities and their conversations within short-term initiatives related to COVID-19. These grants can be used, for example, to launch a dedicated newsletter, create a community group, cover travel costs, cover the costs of audio / video / recording equipment to help remote work, undertake local fact-checking , engage in community data communication, produce short-run print material or organize online events.

For newspapers

Amount: € 10,000, € 25,000

Eligible: News organizations (employing the equivalent of at least one full-time journalist)

Focus: Provide specific financial support to news organizations that rotated / are pivoting on their business model during the COVID-19 crisis. These grants can be used, for example, to invest in resources (including technology, toolkits, people and experts) to: build resilience within teams and leadership, facilitate effective team collaboration and knowledge sharing, create more / better pathways for community participation in newspaper work, perform user-centric product development or develop or launch reader revenue models.

Candidates who meet the following criteria can apply to the Fund:

Freelance journalists or news organizations (non-profit or for profit) with principal place of business located in a Council of Europe country

Who are registered with a press regulator, trust initiative, or part of a press association

Active COVID-19 coverage

Serving hyperlocal, local or regional communities and / or communities of interest. (The communities served must also be in the member countries of the Council of Europe)

Publishing and distribution of content in print, online / web, television, radio, podcast, online video, messaging service ^^, electronic newsletter, mobile app, social media ^^ or any combination of these

They demonstrated community loyalty and focused on producing public interest journalism

Organizations, freelance journalists or groups of freelance journalists who have received funding through WAVE 1. Applicants who were previously unsuccessful can apply again, but must submit a new application.

How to apply

Entries must be received in English via the EJC Good Grants online awards platform by 11:59 pm CEST on Friday 25 September 2020. Account creation is free and, once logged in, applicants must select the 'COVID-19 Support Fund for European Journalism' in the drop-down menu and choose the track to which they apply.

The EJC will decide and manage grants independently of Facebook. The grants are not dependent on the use of Facebook tools and products.

Candidates can apply for only one piece. Previously unsuccessful applicants may re-apply, but must re-apply.

Selected candidates will be notified by Monday 26 October. We will do our best to inform you before this date. And if unforeseen circumstances result in delayed notification, we will contact applicants as soon as possible.
