China and Nigeria conclude an agreement for nuclear development

Nigeria and China will strengthen ties through a new nuclear energy partnership, a government spokesperson said on Tuesday.

At the 2024 Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC) Summit in Beijing, the two nations signed a comprehensive agreement to strengthen collaboration in the Belt and Road Initiative, human resources development and energy nuclear. The alliance is expected to strengthen development, stability and security in the West African sub-region.

Nigeria has been discussing the creation of its own nuclear energy industry for more than a decade, but its plans have so far been slowed by the country's poor financial stability.

China, Nigeria's main bilateral financier, has already invested heavily in the country's infrastructure, with loans of $5 billion at the end of March 2024. The partnership between the two countries has included crucial projects, including a deep-sea port and extensive rail lines under the Belt and Road Initiative, since their cooperation intensified in 2018.

President Bola Tinubu, who attended the summit alongside leaders of 50 African countries, highlighted the potential of this strategic partnership to drive growth not only in Nigeria but also across Africa, underscoring the importance of stability and safety.

Chinese President Xi Jinping said strengthened strategic coordination between China and Nigeria will inject new momentum into China-Africa relations and promote collective progress among countries in the Global South. During his visit, President Tinubu visited Huawei's research laboratory, securing a commitment from the tech giant to establish a joint testing laboratory for solar PV in Nigeria. Another Chinese company has pledged to build an assembly plant for electric tricycles and train Nigerians in renewable energy technology and development.

The deal comes as China is poised to embark on a record-breaking nuclear expansion that will see it build more nuclear power plants than any other country in the world, on its way to becoming the world's largest nuclear generator by 2030. For Nigeria, the partnership offers a promising avenue to advance its energy infrastructure and sustainable development goals.
