Is Von Der Leyen so sure of being re-elected after the birth of “The Patriots”?

The new legislature, which has led to a strong reduction of the Greens and the development of conservative components in the European Parliament, brings some news

Patriots for Europe was born from the ashes of the Identity and Democracy group . The new identity group of the European Parliament, established today, has already become the third in terms of number of members, surpassing the Renew Liberals (76) and the European Conservatives and Reformists (ECR) (78) on the day of its constitution, behind only the People's Party (188) and the Social Democrats (136). The political creature of the Hungarian Prime Minister, Viktor Orbán, as of today (8 July), can count on 84 members of 14 national parties from 12 member countries, including Italy. It will be represented by the League, with the newly elected Roberto Vannacci among the six Vice Presidents behind the first President of Patriots for Europe, the leader of the right-wing French sovereignist Rassemblement National, Jordan Bardella, who last night (7 July) saw the possibility fade away to become the new head of the French Government and will now remain in Brussels to lead the sovereignist front.

Members of the new group are, starting with the former members of ID:

  • 30 French from Rassemblement National,
  • 8 Italians from the League,
  • 2 Portuguese from Chega,
  • 6 Dutch from the Freedom Party (PVV),
  • 3 Belgians from Vlaams Belang 1
  • 1 Danish People's Party
  • 10 Hungarians from Fidesz,
  • 7 Czechs from ANO 2011 (formerly Renew)
  • 6 Austrians from the Austrian Freedom Party
  • 6 Spaniards from Vox (who left the ECR were decisive for the overtaking of Patriots for Europe over the right-wing conservative group),
  • the Hungarian György Hölvényi of the Christian Democratic People's Party (former EPP and close ally of Orbán)
  • 2 Czechs by Oath and Motorists,
  • 1 Greek of “Voice of Reason
  • a member of First Latvia.

The German right-wing AfD remains excluded, despite the good number of members, which will try to form its own group by fishing among the most extremist non-members and who have therefore been excluded from The Patriots, but who, however, can be good for forming a group and access resources accessible only to supranational formations. You will understand the reason for the exclusion immediately.

Are we sure that Ursula Von Der Leyen will be re-elected? The former president of the Commission moves with confidence and thinks he can isolate The Patriots as he did with ID. But these, together with ECR, have 162 seats, not many fewer than the EPP has. How does the former President of the Commission think he can carry on with his usual anti-democratic routine?

Furthermore, let's ask ourselves a few questions: are we sure that Forza Italia, part of the EPP, is willing to lightly vote for a coalition that includes the socialists and winks at the greens? Likewise, the Spaniards and Greeks, who harshly oppose the socialists in their own countries, how happily will they support them in the European Parliament? We remember that the vote for the election of the President of the Commission is secret and in the ballot box, where Von Der Leyen and the party discipline do not see you . How many will drink the bitter cup of a president who is under investigation for Pfizergate?

Let's also ask ourselves how many Germans will vote for their candidate. The current CDU-CSU, of Friedrich Merz, is not that of Merkel, who elected her, but exercises a strong opposition to the green, socialist and liberal coalition that Von Der Leyen would like to resurrect the parliament. Let us remember that the leader of the CDU Manfred Weber in the EP is a failed president of the Commission, betrayed by his own party to elect Von Der Leyen. Won't you be tempted to return the favor, confirming the wise Roman saying that whoever enters the conclave as pope comes out as a cardinal?

A political problem. Von Der Leyen. The latest national and European political elections have signaled a great desire for a change of direction among European citizens, tired of the proclamations linked to the various, often foolish, "Green" policies. There is a desire to return to rationality, to policies not imposed from above and to the search for widespread well-being, not progressive impoverishment. The clear defeat of the Greens, almost everywhere, was a clear sign of this.

Von Der Leyen, however transformative and attached to power, is the least suitable person for this change of direction: how can one think that she will cancel directives such as "Green Home" which she herself had approved even just a few months ago? If the EPP really wants to bring about a political change, it must bet on a different horse, perhaps more sympathetic to Merz himself.

What Giorgia Meloni and the ECR will do . In this situation, Giorgia Meloni's position can be decisive, if she plays her cards well and does not allow herself to be enticed by promises which, in reality, turn out to be false. In the last legislature ECR was often very soft with Von Der Leyen, because the Polish PiS, dominus of the group, thought they could be smarter than everyone and tame the EPP with a condescending attitude. A sensational mistake because the EPP waged a very harsh war, supported by the socialists, against the Polish government, even threatening to cut contributions according to the "Rule of Law", which applies only to political opponents.

Now Giorgia Meloni, with a more substantial group and closeness to the Patriots, can afford to be truly relevant in decisions, but only if she decides not to be duped by promises made, just to return to the curial tone, in the conclave. Any promise made on election day will disappear the next day, unless there is a direct controlling hand in the palace games of Brussels, but this can only happen by not accepting games imposed by politicians who are now out of business.
