Mauritania and Senegal begin exporting LNG from the large Greater Tortue field

BP said on Thursday it has safely loaded the first export-bound LNG cargo from Phase 1 of its Greater Tortue Ahmeyim project off the coasts of Mauritania and Senegal, as the British supermajor continues to push ahead with major projects. The first gas from the project was announced earlier this year.

Now, the export of the first cargo of LNG from the project off West Africa will make Mauritania and Senegal LNG exporting countries, contributing to global LNG supplies.

Phase 1 of the Greater Tortue Ahmeyim (GTA) is set to produce around 2.3 million tonnes of LNG per year and the project is expected to produce LNG for more than 20 years, according to BP.

"This first cargo from Mauritania and Senegal marks an important new supply for global energy markets. The start of exports from GTA Phase 1 is an important step for BP and our oil and gas business, as we celebrate the creation of a new production hub within our global portfolio," said Gordon Birrell, EVP Production & Operations at BP.

The LNG export project is one of BP's major key developments, which it plans to operationalize over the next two years as part of its new oil and gas production growth strategy.

The supermajor plans to increase its global upstream production to 2.3-2.5 million barrels of oil equivalent in 2030, with the possibility of increasing production through 2035.

BP has begun announcing new startup projects in the oil and gas sector as part of its plan to launch 10 large projects around the world between 2025 and 2027 and grow upstream production.

Earlier this month, BP said its Cypre project off the coast of Trinidad and Tobago produced first gas .

Soon after teasing a major strategic reorientation in February, BP announced the start of production from the second phase of development of the Raven field off the coast of Egypt. The project involves the subsea connection of additional Raven infill wells to existing onshore infrastructure as part of the West Nile Delta (WND) project.
