PIIGS, after the event film, the book arrives

Like the film from which it descends, the book entitled "PIIGS – Or, how I learned to worry and fight austerity" is unique in the publishing landscape. His goal, fully achieved, is to talk about macroeconomics (money, European economic policies, austerity) by mixing non-fiction and narration.

An operation that had already characterized the film in 2017, with success given that it remained in cinemas for nine weeks, running parallel to the "high" macroeconomic reflection and the "low" story of the Monterotondo Social Cooperative "Il Pungiglione" , in deep crisis precisely because of the Stability Pact, one of the aspects of austerity.

THE TRUE STORY OF PIIGS

In the book, edited by Federico Greco, the three authors – the same ones in the film – add another narrative element: the first part in fact ("The true story of our history") tells the events that, over the span of almost six years, led to the making of a film that everyone considered impossible. Unique, rare references to the subject matter can only be found in American cinema ( La grande bet , for example), while in Italy, only recently, in a television series for SKY, I diavoli (2020).

This first part is pleasant, it flows smoothly and without rhetoric, with a strong degree of self-irony but also with a solid awareness of the undertaking to be completed. As the authors themselves say, “PIIGS” is an operation that is four times impossible: a documentary (and now a book too); independent ; Italian ; on macroeconomics .

This is an issue that will never go out of fashion, because the destiny of each of us is increasingly linked to macroeconomic choices made at the top of the European Union and therefore difficult to understand and control. How many can say they have read the ECB statute or the European treaties? How many know exactly what the spread is , despite having been obsessively hearing about it in the media for several years? Or the MES? Yet it is exactly in those documents and in this terminology that the secret of understanding the reasons why we will have a decent pension tomorrow , today we will find work or not, our company will fail or resist.

"PIIGS" has the merit of bringing these themes "to human height", the ability to make them understandable and to paint the general picture, connecting the dots.
