US blocks imports of Huawei and ZTE for security reasons

The Biden administration has banned the approval of new telecommunications equipment from Chinese companies Huawei Technologies and ZTE because they pose an "unacceptable risk" to US national security. This objectively blocks the importation of any new product of these Chinese companies into the USA.

In addition, the US Federal Communications Commission said Friday it had adopted final rules, which also bar the sale or import of equipment made by Chinese surveillance equipment maker Dahua Technology Co, by video surveillance firm Hangzhou Hikvision Digital Technology Co Ltd and telecommunications company Hytera Communications Corp Ltd.

The move represents Washington's latest crackdown on Chinese tech giants, out of fears that Beijing could use them to spy on Americans. “These new rules are an important part of our ongoing actions to protect the American people from national security threats involving telecommunications,” FCC Chair Jessica Rosenworcel said in a statement.

Huawei declined to comment. ZTE, Dahua, Hytera and the Chinese embassy in Washington did not immediately respond to requests for comment. Hikvision said in a statement that its products do not threaten the security of the United States. “This decision by the FCC will do nothing to protect the national security of the United States, but it will go a long way towards making it more harmful and more costly for small businesses, local authorities, school districts and individual consumers to protect themselves, their homes, their businesses and properties,” Hikvision said, adding that it will continue to serve U.S. customers “in full compliance” with U.S. regulations.

Last month Rosenworcel presented the proposed measure, which effectively prevents companies from selling new equipment in the United States, to the other three commissioners for final approval. The FCC said in June 2021 that it was considering banning all permits for equipment from all companies included in the list.

All four of the agency's commissioners, including two Republicans and two Democrats, backed Friday's move, making it a bipartisan decision. In addition, the agency maintained all previously stated sanctions. The FCC's decision poses a further obstacle to the normalization of relations between China and the USA, however tense due to issues relating to Taiwan's security.
