Because the EU will burn nuclear and gas

Because the EU will burn nuclear and gas

Gas and nuclear power remain outside the EU's green investments. All the details based on the Ansa indiscretions

Gas and nuclear are not green energy sources. At least at the moment. This is sanctioned by the European Union which in the next Taxonomy does not grant the 'green' economic activity stamp to the two sources.

A choice that is not surprising: even the EIB, despite the reluctance of some member states, has recently excluded gas from green financing. Let's go step by step.

TAXONOMY: THE EXCLUSION OF GAS AND NUCLEAR

According to the so-called Taxonomy, that is the communication on the EU classification of green investments, gas and nuclear will not have the EU certificate of 'green' economic activity, reveals Ansa , which has examined the document.

GAS: A SEPARATE LEGISLATIVE PROPOSAL

As regards gas, considered a fundamental ally in the energy transition, in reality, the EU would be working on "a separate legislative proposal" that should arrive "in the last part of the year". The proposal aims to cover "transition technologies", respecting "the right of Member States to determine their energy mix appropriately".

THE CHOICES OF THE EIB

The choice of the European Union is not surprising. Already in 2019, the European Investment Bank, chaired by the German Werner Hoyer, had paved the way , establishing that from the end of 2021 it will no longer finance projects based on fossil fuels, including gas.

THE GUIDELINES

The EIB will trigger “a trillion”, that is one trillion euros, of investments in the next decade, following five cornerstones: energy efficiency; decarbonization; decentralized energy production, innovative storage and electric mobility; investments in networks; strengthening of cross-border interconnections.

CHOICE NOT SHARED BY ITALY

And already in 2019, the stop to financing projects in the gas sector was not shared by all Member States. Italy, but also Germany, Poland, Romania, among others, were against such a restrictive energy policy.
