Defense, all Leonardo projects financed with the EDF

Defense, all Leonardo projects financed with the EDF

Leonardo is the European player that has obtained funding for the largest number of projects under the European Defense Fund (EDF)

Leonardo has been awarded the largest number of research and development projects under the European Defense Fund (EDF).

In particular, the Italian defense and aerospace giant was awarded a total of 19 projects (11 for capacitive development and 8 for research), of which five concern the Cyber division.

These are the programs: 5G Compad, Achile, Adequade, Agami_Eurigami, Arturo, Commands, Ecoballife, Edinaf, Edocc, Eicacs, Engrt, Epiic, Epw, Eu-Guardian, Eurohaps, Faradai, Indy, nNavguard and nNeumann.

“Having won so many EDF tenders is a sign of good health, even prospective, because it means being considered capable of developing the technologies of the future” said Alessandro Profumo, CEO of Leonardo in an interview with the 19th Century.

WHAT IS THE EUROPEAN DEFENSE FUND

EDF is the Commission's flagship tool for promoting European defense cooperation for competitive and collaborative projects covering the entire research and development cycle. This tool supports, in particular, projects relating to cutting-edge and interoperable defense technologies and equipment, while promoting innovation and encouraging the participation of SMEs.

Specifically, the funds allocated by the EU amount to 1.2 billion euros, distributed among 61 approved projects.

“Italy in this context, with 36 funded projects, is positioned immediately after France, Spain and Germany, targeting the 5 nationally-led projects, a result to which Leonardo has contributed significantly” underlines a note from the former Finmeccanica group.

LEONARDO PLAYER PROTAGONIST OF EDF PROGRAMS

The projects in which Leonardo participates have won over 50% of the European funds for WP 21.

"The company, in particular, with the significant contribution of the subsidiaries and investee companies of the group and the Leonardo Labs, has been awarded funding for research and development activities in all 12 categories in which it participated, relating to the electronics, aircraft , helicopters, cyber security and space ”underlines Leonardo's note.

THE LEADERSHIP OF THE ARTURO PROGRAM

Among these, there is the Arturo program (Advanced Radar Technology in eUROpe) which sees the group in Piazza Monte Grappa as coordinator.

The Leonardo-led “Advanced Radar Technology in eUROpe” (Arturo) project will provide solutions to meet future operational needs based on an extensive use of emerging radar technologies in Europe. It will consolidate state-of-the-art technologies, emerging concepts and trends in the radar field, in-depth analysis of operational requirements, and the current evolution of threats and environments in various countries.

WORKING WITH AIRBUS, THALES, INDRA AND HENSOLDT

Leonardo will coordinate a group of 22 companies at European level, including Airbus Defense and Space Gmbh, Thales, Indra, Hensoldt, Saab and Italian companies such as the University of Pavia.

THE VALUE OF THE PROJECT

The overall value of the project is approximately 20 million euros for a duration of 36 months.

TOGETHER WITH AIRBUS WORKING ON THE ENGRT

Among the most strategically significant programs – indicates the Group led by Alessandro Profumo -, Leonardo has established itself together with Airbus (coordinator) in the ENGRT (EU Next Generation Rotorcraft Technologies). It is a consortium of 24 European partners with the aim of studying the new requirements, characteristics and key capabilities of future military helicopter technologies.

The NGRT program “concerns research on the future operational environment (Foe) and on the future operational concepts (Foc) of military Vtol systems in the 2035/2040 horizon”.

These include operability and operational flexibility; accessibility both in terms of procurement and life cycle cost; sustainability and operational readiness; interoperability for joint and combined operations and collaborative combat and resilience.

The project, with an expected funding of about 40 million euros and lasting 42 months, will also concern the evaluation of alternatives in terms of platforms and architectures and a series of demonstration activities in a simulated environment through the use of "virtual twins" . To this we must add a development roadmap for both technologies and support and maintenance activities.

ALSO PRESENT MBDA ITALIA, ELETTRONICA, AVIO AERO, POLIMI AND CIRA

Among the other Italian companies part of the consortium are Mbda Italia, Elettronica, AvioAero, the Politecnico di Milano and the Cira.

THE INDY PROJECT

Finally, as Leonardo's CEO in Secolo XIX illustrated; there is also "the Indy (Energy Independent and Efficient Deployable Military Camps) project which aims to develop a strategic roadmap towards future energy independent military bases based on a paradigm shift for production, conversion, storage, transport, distribution and end use of energy ". In Indy, adds Profumo, “Leonardo works on defining the scenarios for the use of a cyber-secure electrical microgrid; the University is involved in the modeling and simulation of the behavior of the electricity grid ”.
