GemaTeg, here are the accounts and business of Leonardo’s allied company on the environmental impact of chips
Everything about GemaTeg, the company with which Leonardo will collaborate to reduce emissions from new generation chips.
Increase the computing power of each chip but reduce emissions and keep performance unchanged.
This is the objective of the partnership established by Leonardo with GemaTeg, a company based in Perugia, Seattle and Lausanne, to reduce the energy costs of new generation chips used in Artificial Intelligence (AI) infrastructures.
The partnership is "aimed at reducing the energy costs of new generation chips used in artificial intelligence infrastructures", reads the note from the Italian aerospace and defense group.
GemaTeg is in fact specialized in temperature control solutions at a localized and command level and, as part of the partnership, through the integrated and modular DaTeg system it will reduce the energy footprint of data centers and improve the efficiency of the High Performing Computer systems of the former Finmeccanica group .
As Carlo Cavazzoni, Head of Digital Infrastructures at Leonardo, explains, the solution involves "a sort of micro-refrigerator inside the server, with which the temperature of the processor can be controlled". The system will be implemented first in the GemaTeg laboratories and in Leonardo's data center in Chieti, and then also applied to the davinci-1 supercomputer in Genoa .
All the details.
THE OBJECTIVE OF THE PARTNERSHIP BETWEEN LEONARDO AND GEMATEG ON CHIPS
The water thermal management system, based on GemaTeg's DaTeg technology, will allow the microprocessors to operate at optimal temperatures, improving performance and reducing energy consumption. The solution will allow the efficiency of the chips to be increased by 30%, will contribute to reducing the energy footprint of data centers and optimizing the efficiency of Leonardo's High-Performance Computing (HPC) systems.
Thanks to the precise control of the operating conditions, DaTeg allows you to adapt the cooling power based on the load conditions of the chips, following a "localized cooling" approach, i.e. localized cooling that dynamically regulates the temperature of each individual chip.
The new generation chips, driven by performance needs, produce unprecedented quantities of heat, going from 300Watt-400Watt to over 1000Watt, and overheating leads to slowing down the calculation cycles, reducing performance by up to 50%.
THE BENEFITS
Through localized cooling, it will be possible to intervene to eliminate the "bottlenecks" that arise in the event of overheating of the microprocessor. Total consumption will also be minimized, based on the development of thermal management strategies that aim to dynamically cool where and how much is necessary.
WHAT GEMATEG DOES
“The partnership between GemaTeg and Leonardo is a testament to our joint commitment to promoting innovation and sustainability in the artificial intelligence sector. Our innovative solutions improve chip performance and contribute to protecting the environment by optimizing the use of resources,” said Maurizio Miozza, Co-Founder and CTO of GemaTeg.
Miozza himself, together with Manfred Markevitch, founded this startup active in the energy sector in 2019 which is divided between Italy – Umbria in particular with its headquarters in Perugia – the United States with an office in Seattle and Switzerland with an office in Lausanne.
The startup develops thermal management solutions that overcome the limitations of the AI sector, increasing computational capacity and reducing consumption.
THE MEETING AND THE IDEA OF THE TWO FOUNDERS
As Enzo Argante said last year in Forbes “The idea works great and the two founders achieve the goals they had set for themselves. Miozza, a true Perugian with a degree in Physics, left his homeland as a young man, in his early twenties, to pursue the dream of research. CERN in Geneva, then Paris, Germany, up to New Mexico. In the end he decides to return and embarks on a new path in the aeronautical sector. For twenty years he worked as the business development manager of UmbraGroup, in particular of the mechatronics line, keeping together these two opposite but complementary aspects of his person, the technical one and the business one. Here he meets Manfred Markevitch, a finance specialist who spent years between the City of London and Wall Street, before settling in Italy working alongside important multinationals."
THE US PARENT
With a share capital of 100,000 euros, GemaTeg is 100% controlled by the US GemaTeg Inc. The company, based in Delaware in the United States, represented by Manfred Marketivitch.
In addition to the president Silvia Matacchioni, the managing director Manfred Markevitch and Maurizio Miozza make up the board of directors.
THE TECHNICAL ADVISORS
As stated on the website , the company makes use of technical advisors: John Acocella, Ph.D., Babak Falsafi, Professor at EPFL and Computer Scientist, Dario Narducci, Professor of Physical Chemistry at the University of Milan Bicocca, Stéphane Jaquet, EPFL Engineer, Certified auditor for Datacenters, DCC Consulting, Terry Kelly Partner at Dorsey & Whitney LLP, Giovanna Mazzoleni, Scientific and Academic Advisor, University of Brescia and Guillaume Wiatr, Strategy & Communication.
THE NUMBERS OF GEMATEG, THE STARTUP WITH WHICH LEONARDO WILL COLLABORATE FOR CHIP EFFICIENCY
Turning now to the accounts, the company recorded a turnover of 117 thousand euros in 2022, down compared to the 207 thousand euros of the previous year, according to the Chamber of Commerce certificate filed. In 2022 GemaTeg closed the financial year in the red: the loss stood at 110,623 euros, a slight improvement compared to the red of 130 thousand euros in 2021. Production costs stood at 257 thousand euros, compared to 374 thousand euros in 2021 .
GemaTeg's total debts for 2022 amount to 718,765 euros.
STATE AID RECEIVED
Finally, again from the financial statement report, it emerges that in the 2022 financial year the company benefited from the following state aid: loan of 175 thousand euros provided by Intesa Sanpaolo with guarantee granted by Mediocredito Centrale – Banca del Mezzogiorno, for a duration of 84 months. In addition to 50 thousand euros also provided by Intesa Sanapolo for a duration of 18 months. Both based on Legislative Decree 8 April 202 n.23 regarding the Guarantee Fund for small and medium-sized enterprises.
In addition to these loans, GemaTeg still has another loan contracted in 2020 amounting to 30 thousand euros from Intesa Sanpaolo. Furthermore, the company, as an innovative startup, joined the Invitalia "Smart&Start" tender thanks to which it received two loans from the National Agency for attracting investments and business development: 97 thousand euros in 2021 and 77 thousand euros in 2022.
