Here are the best-selling electric cars in Italy in 2021

In 2021, 136,754 electric cars were registered in Italy. Growth from the previous year is substantial, but the sector is concerned about the lack of incentives. All the numbers on the best-selling models

In 2021, 136,754 electric cars were registered in Italy, including battery-powered vehicles (BEVs) and plug-in hybrids (PHEVs). Compared to the previous year, the growth was 128.2 percent.

The data is provided by MOTUS-E , the association that brings together the operators of the Italian electric mobility chain.

ELECTRIC CAR REGISTRATIONS IN ITALY IN 2021

Specifically, 67,255 battery electric cars (BEVs) and 69,499 plug-in hybrids (PHEVs) were registered in 2021. The increase compared to 2020 was 107 and 153.7 percent, respectively.

THE MARKET SHARE

Electric cars in Italy achieved a 9.3 percent market share last year. In 2020, their penetration stood at 4.3 per cent.

THE MOST SOLD ELECTRIC CARS IN ITALY IN 2021

The best-selling electric car in Italy in 2021 was the Fiat 500e, with 10,720 units. Followed by the smart fortwo with 6163 units and, in third place, the Renault Twingo with 5821.

Fourth and fifth places in the ranking are occupied by the Dacia Spring (5494) and the Tesla Model 3 (5045).

SALES IN DECEMBER 2021

Taking into consideration the month of December 2021 alone, MOTUS-E recorded a decrease of 13.2 percent in registrations compared to the same month of 2020: 11,833 units sold.

The strongest decline was that of BEVs: -15.2 per cent, for 6158 units registered. Plug-in hybrids, on the other hand, fell by nearly 11 percent, with 5,676 units registered.

For a monthly comparison, 12,533 electric vehicles, both battery and plug-in hybrids , had been sold as of November 2021 .

THE CAUSES

The worst performance of electric vehicles must be contextualized. Last month, in fact, the entire Italian car market was particularly sluggish, with just 87,338 cars sold – an all-time low, says MOTUS-E.

There are three main reasons for this condition. First of all, the difficulties in procuring raw materials and components (such as microchips ). Following, in the MOTUS-E analysis, there is the possibility of registering cars purchased by booking via Ecobonus by next June. Finally, the association speaks of a "visible effect of the end of the incentives for electric cars, which took place in October 2021".

THE CONCERNS OF THE CHAIN

MOTUS-E, representing the entire electric mobility chain, is worried about the end of the incentives for the purchase of electric vehicles and their lack of planning for the next three years.

"In the absence of further support", writes the association, "it is plausible to hypothesize that the values of BEVs registered in the first months of 2022 will be lower than those of the first months of 2021". "The lack of purchase bonuses", he continues, "will divert the few electric vehicles produced in Italy to more attractive markets".

THE APPEAL TO THE GOVERNMENT ON INCENTIVES

According to MOTUS-E, "it is truly incomprehensible that the government has decided to completely ignore the sector, in a rebound of responsibility […] that borders on the grotesque and which will be reflected in the dramatic reduction in registrations of electric and plug-in hybrid cars in 2022 ".

The association hopes the ministries of economic development and economy will intervene on the issue of the refinancing of incentives. In the absence of the latter, according to an estimate made by MOTUS-E and ANFIA (National Association of the Automobile Industry Industry), in 2022 the market share in Italy of zero- and low-emission vehicles will drop to about 5 percent.
