Italian companies accelerate in digital. Especially in the South

After Campania, the most dynamic regions are Puglia (+49.2%), Abruzzo (+46.2%) and Sicily (+42.6%) testifying to the strong attraction of services linked to the economy digital for businesses in the South. What emerges from the InfoCamere report

The number of companies embarking on digital transformation which, as is well known, constitutes one of the backbones of the Pnrr is constantly increasing and, with them, the offer of services essential to embarking on this path is also growing.

According to a research carried out by the InfoCamere Data Scientist Team – based on Movimprese data – companies that offer services for the development of digital activities in Italy have grown by 37 percent in the last ten years (against growth in the entire services sector by 13.5%), above all thanks to the strong push of the southern regions.

The study focused attention on the business sectors that more than others can offer tools and technologies capable of supporting the digitization of businesses: from e-commerce services to internet connection services, from data processing to software production. At the end of 2022, the perimeter of this universe consisted of 146,583 companies of all sizes and legal types, against 104,508 at the end of 2012.

At the end of the decade, the regions that host the most are Lombardy (30,856) Lazio (18,556) and Campania (14,671) but, in the period considered, it was the latter that achieved the largest increase in relative terms (+68.9%). After Campania, the most dynamic regions were three other regions of the South: Puglia (+49.2%), Abruzzo (+46.2%) and Sicily (+42.6%) testifying to the strong attractiveness of services related to the digital economy for companies in the South, which increased overall by 50% in the period.

In absolute terms, companies operating in e-commerce services grew the most, almost tripling compared to 2012 (from 10,383 to 37,008 units). This is followed by companies specializing in the production of software, the most numerous ever, reaching 55,178 in September 2022 compared to 43,996 at the beginning of the decade (+25.4% in the period).

Companies in the data processing sector are also growing, but at a slower pace than the others (+9% the cumulative increase achieved over the decade, which has brought this segment from just over 41,985 to 45,774 units). The only sector that shows a decline in the players in the field is that of companies operating in the supply of internet services, which decreased by 21.3% in the period considered.
