Numbers and trends of innovative startups. Infocamere report
What emerges from the quarterly report of MISE, InfoCamere and Unioncamere
Lombardy, Lazio and Campania are the regions with the highest concentration of innovative startups. This is one of the aspects that emerges from the quarterly monitoring report , dedicated to the demographic trends and economic performance of innovative startups, MISE, InfoCamere and Unioncamere.
The report, which presents data updated as of January 1, 2021, is the result of the collaboration between MISE and InfoCamere, with the support of the Chamber of Commerce system.
The report offers a broad overview of the world of startups, almost eight years after the introduction of the dedicated policy (legislative decree 179/2012), and constitutes one of the pillars of the extensive monitoring system managed by MISE.
- Among the main information contained in the report:
Population growth: the registered startups are now steadily settling above 10 thousand. As of January 1, 2021, there were 11,899, 3.2% of all newly established joint stock companies. - Territorial distribution: Lombardy hosts over a quarter of all Italian startups (27.0%). The province of Milan alone, with 2,282, represents 19.2% of the population, more than any other region: Lazio exceeds one thousand with 1,383, represents 11.6%, (largely located in Rome, 1,237, 10.4% nationally) and Campania , with 1,053, 8.9% of the national total. However, the region with the highest density of innovative companies is Trentino-Alto Adige, where approximately 5.4% of all companies established in the last 5 years are startups.
- Workforce: the shareholders of the company, compared to the previous quarter, increased slightly (+ 0.5%) reaching over 56 thousand [1]. The representation of companies founded by under-35s is high (19.0% of the total), while female businesses are under-represented: 13.1%, compared to 21.5% registered in the whole of joint-stock companies.
- Turnover: innovative startups are mainly micro-enterprises, boasting an average production value of just over 184.7 thousand euros. This is also due to the constant turnover to which this population is subject: by definition, the “best-performer” companies, more consolidated in terms of age and turnover, gradually tend to lose the status of innovative startups.
- Investments and profitability: as physiological, innovative startups show a higher incidence than the average of loss-making companies (over 52.6% against 30.9% overall). However, companies in profit show particularly positive values in terms of profitability (ROI, ROE) and added value. Furthermore, innovative startups have a fixed asset rate – one of the main indicators of companies' propensity to invest – around seven times higher than other comparable companies.
