What are Blue Barriers and how they work

The Blue Barriers (garbage barriers installed in the Tiber and Aniene) are the invention of two Italian engineers and can concretely contribute to the reduction of pollution of waterways. All the details in the article by Ruggero Po taken from his blog

In Lazio, the Region began to install them in 2019 and the first ones were installed in the Tiber and Aniene. Blue Barriers are installations that, placed across the river, allow water to pass and retain waste.

Already ten and a half tons collected

In these three years, thanks to the work of the Blue Barriers, nine tons of various types of waste have been collected in addition to a ton and a half of iron cans, tires, refrigerators, LPG cylinders, water heaters, helmets, mattresses, ping pong tables. , washing machines. Objects that otherwise end up in the sea with the consequences we know, from the plastic islands, which float in the oceans, to the contamination of the food chain.

How the Blue Barrier works

The Blue Barriers are chains of modular elements in plastic, including recycled, connected to each other through a system of pipes and steel cables that make them capable of facing any river conditions. The plastics and other types of waste collected, thanks to the exploitation of the movement of the currents, are conveyed to special collection basins. The modules, just over a meter high, sink about 90 centimeters, and are each one meter wide. In the event of floods and exceptional events, they are able to unhook and open without human intervention. Waste emptying must be carried out at least twice a week.

It all started with an Italian startup in London

Seads (Sea Defense Solutions) is the English startup that, with Garbage Group of Ancona, has been awarded the tender announced by the Lazio Region. Fabio Dalmonte is one of the two Italian engineers, he resides in London, the other in New York, who founded it and are still at the helm.
