On 21 July 2021 the board of directors of the National Research Council (CNR), unanimously and on the proposal of the president, Maria Chiara Carrozza, appointed Giuseppe Colpani as general manager, who will take up service on 1 September 2021 at post of Giambattista Brignone and will remain in office for the duration of the mandate of the president. The conferment took place downstream of a selection process, operated by a search committee, among about 50 expressions of interest received following a public notice issued by the body last May, according to a note from the CNR.

Colpani, who leaves the general direction of the University of Rome "Tor Vergata", in his career has held numerous management positions in various important institutions, including the University of Bologna and the Area Science Park of Trieste. Its business has developed over the years in both the public and private sectors (in particular, the Ferruzzi-Montedison group). At the beginning of his career he was also Director of the Piacenza branch of the Catholic University.

Colpani has gained experience in university associations at national and international level, as Deputy Vice President of the National Association of University General Managers (CODAU) and, today, as national manager of managerial training and internationalization, reads the note of the Cnr: “At the European level he is currently the Italian representative at the Round Table of the Humane Association, Chairman of the Steering Committee Professional Pathways and member of the Advisory Board for the analysis of the evolution of the general manager figure in European universities.
