With the Tap, Italy's energy security is ok. Word of the secret services

What do you read about Italy's energy security in the annual report of the Secret Services

Finally, the depressive consequences of the pandemic crisis also affected the national energy supply, which, due to the slowdown in the economy, saw consumption contract significantly. Particularly affected was the demand for oil, which fell by about 15% due to the measures to limit mobility, and that of natural gas, which fell by 5% due to the parallel reduction in electricity requirements.

As regards the international hydrocarbon markets, on which the Italian economy depends, 2020 was characterized by a structural excess of supply, which had the double effect of containing the cost of raw materials, with positive repercussions on the trade balance, and at the same time to increase the redundancy of supplies, compressing the potential negative implications of any interruption of flows from a single supplier.

Infrastructural developments, especially in the gas sector, also contributed to the increase in the country's ability to access international markets. In this sense, the entry into operation at the end of the year of the TAP gas pipeline, the terminal section of the transport corridor that connects Azerbaijan with the Apulian coasts, crossing Anatolia, Greece and Albania, was particularly significant. it allows, when fully operational, to supply volumes equal to 10% of the national requirement, helping to diversify supplies.

Overall, therefore, the weakness of final consumption and the abundance of supply significantly mitigated the risks for national energy security, even in a context in which the attention of the Intelligence continued to concern both the integrity of production, transport and distribution, and the geopolitical stability in the supplying and transit countries of flows
directed to Italy, with a view to verifying its adequacy for the years to come, when the recovery of global demand in the post-pandemic context will change the current situation.

The information action also concerned, in a longer-term perspective and in continuity with the past, the monitoring of the possible impacts on national security of the decarbonisation process of the European economy, both in terms of the stability and reliability of the energy supply (see table no. 18), and with reference to the challenges posed to the competitiveness of the production system, in the face of changes in the technological paradigms of the main national industrial sectors.
