The self-destruction of our identity: a lucidly pursued political plan, not an oversight by bureaucrats

By now we have returned to the slogan "counterorder comrades", with which Giovanni Guareschi scoffed at the blind obedience to the directives of the high commune in the militants of the old Italian Communist Party. Only this time there is no mention of the PCI and the rites of the old-fashioned left. The European Commission, the EU's highest governing body, is no less involved.

The story is well known and I will not go into detail. On the other hand, it is important to note the hasty backtracking of the Commission in the face of fierce criticism that welcomed the disclosure of the "Guidelines on inclusive communication" issued by Brussels.

So we are really getting there, to the great joy of large sectors of the Italian, European and Western left in general. The goal to be achieved – and in an advanced stage of achievement – is the loss of our identity. Or even better, and using perhaps a little too philosophical terms, the loss of our soul.

Union bureaucrats are finally heading towards a Christmas without nativity scenes and other hateful symbols of the Christian heritage. And, in addition, classrooms from which the crucifix is strictly banned. With that the holidays are reduced to purely commercial fairs from which all references to our past, to our history are expelled with inexorable rigor. It is now difficult to understand "who" and "what" we are.

The triumph of politically correct advances at a charging pace, between the beating of drums and trumpet blasts. Without understanding that this march will lead us towards total nothingness, a void that others – smarter than us – will not struggle to fill with symbols and attitudes foreign to the West.

We have become weak, picky, very attentive to the values of others and contemptuous of those who for two millennia have forged our way of seeing the world, the interpretative grids that underlie our culture.

But are we really sure that the aforementioned "Guidelines" are the work of only bureaucrats, and should therefore be devalued? I allow myself to have some doubts about it. They must have some political coverage, and I would not be surprised if Ursula von der Leyen and Charles Michel, while hating each other, had made an important contribution to their drafting.

It is really disheartening to see how the aforementioned march finds legitimacy precisely in the symbolic seats of power. First of all , the European Union headquarters building in Brussels, without forgetting that almost all the leaders of the West, even more than bewildered, seem intent on a work of endless self-destruction.

And it is a trend pursued with clarity worthy of a better cause. Not self-deception, therefore, but a clear and coherent design based on clichés (which have become such in recent times), on complexes of guilt and on an infinite desire for expiation. Complexes of guilt – let's be honest – that others do not harbor at all, even if their history would lead us to think that they are certainly no better than us. On the contrary: the opposite.

The attempt to build bridges is incessant even when it is understood that they will not bear the hoped-for results. Dialogue obviously implies that the other party is willing not only to listen, but also to make concessions by giving up something. But concessions are always one-sided. It cannot be otherwise when the interlocutor – moderate or extremist – is in any case convinced that he is right by having access to an absolute and incontrovertible Truth.

One wonders what criteria of rationality is obeyed by the "advice" to avoid giving newborn Christian names such as Mary and John, since they would not be "inclusive" at all since they are linked to a certain civilization and a specific culture (our ). Let us also ask ourselves what would happen if we "advised" Muslim parents not to give names like Mohamed and Aisha to their children. It is easy to predict the scandalized reactions, perhaps accompanied by some attacks.

Meanwhile, the number of states that, after adopting the sharia as the only law, prohibit the practice of any cult that is not their own, and also any reference to Christianity (on pain of imprisonment or even worse) is increasing. It has been said many times that true dialogue must necessarily be based on reciprocity. In other words, I allow you to build a place of worship in my country if you allow me to do the same in yours. Words to the wind, as restrictions and persecutions have even increased and the European Commission does not seem to notice.

Nor does it seem reasonable to expect that those who land in Europe, while maintaining their customs and their laws, will be willing to replace the terms "father" and "mother" with "parent 1" and "parent 2". How to blame them in this case? This is an enormous nonsense from which – for now – a vote by the Italian Parliament has saved us. But it is not over, since it is very likely that it will be re-proposed, just as the "Guidelines" of the EU Commission mentioned above will plausibly be re-proposed.

It seems to me that the optimism shown by a certain part of the political (and ecclesial) world is unfounded. And that even worse days than those we have just experienced are there waiting for us without even the slightest capacity to react. Moreover, isn't Belgium proposing to eliminate any reference to the sexes on identity cards since it would be too “binary”? And hasn't anyone in the UK proposed extending the right to vote to primary school children aged 6 and up? A provocation, it has been said, but I would not be surprised if it was put into practice in the near future.
