120 Years of Central Bank Reserves: Was the Euro a Success?

In this short video, prepared by Video Capitalist, the evolution of the various world currencies within the world reserves managed by Central Banks is presented. We are therefore talking about currency reserves, not those in precious metals, and these are the mirror of the world dominance of a currency in the commercial and financial exchanges of that particular period.

The first part has above all a historical value:

  • before the Great War we see the leading positions of French Franco, Sterling and German Mark;
  • In the space between the world wars we note the alternation between the US dollar and the British pound, which becomes predominant during the Second World War
  • Then we see a progressive decline in the pound, which in any case does not disappear, and the return of the West German mark and the yen, as well as from the ECU.
  • And here a surprise, for many. The Euro does not replace the sum of the German mark and other European currencies in reserves. In the end, the Euro has a lower weight than it used to be in individual European countries in the safes of world central banks.

But wasn't the Euro supposed to be a huge success which meant the return of Europe to world finance? Apparently not
