CAREFUL NOT TO CONFUSE SCIENCE WITH DOGMA (by Giuseppe Palma)

The mistake is to regard science as infallible . “ Science says so, so we believe it ”, “ the technical-scientific committee said so, so it's right “.

It doesn't work like that . Or, rather, when Man believed it was so, he created real monsters.

Science is doubt, debate, thesis and antithesis. If deemed infallible or indisputable, it becomes dogma . It is no coincidence that our Constitution, in article 33 , ensures the highest level of freedom for science and art: " Art and science are free and their teaching is free ".

The concept of the infallibility of science, which can be traced back to the dogmatic vulgate “ shut up, science says so ”, has always produced dire consequences .
If I remember correctly, it was some self-styled " scientists " and several university professors who signed the " manifesto of the race " of 1938. And there were not even a few who later joined it, joyful and applauding in the presence of the "superiority of some races over others ".

Even at the time they said: " science says so ".
If you look carefully at the images posted here, under the word "race" it says " science ".

Benedict XVI said in May 2012: " paradoxically, precisely the positivist culture, excluding the question about God from the scientific debate, determines the decline of thought and the weakening of the capacity for intelligence of reality ", where the "question about God" is to be to be understood – in my opinion – not as a doubt about Faith, but as a doubt about the infallibility of science and above all as a question about the relationship between science and ethics.

A few years earlier, in 2007, Benedict XVI – the greatest theologian of the last sixty years – was prevented by some university professors, who believe themselves to be " scientists ", from going to La Sapienza for the inauguration of the Academic Year . The "science-dogma" that censors the "science-doubt". With the students (the so-called organized minority) sided with the professors. What an ignoble decline our universities have had!

It is no coincidence, in fact, in the situation in which we find ourselves from February onwards, that it was a catwalk virologist – also a university professor – who uttered the famous phrase " science is not democratic ". Nothing could be more false. Science, if not confused with dogma, is absolutely democratic, where by "democratic" we mean the existence of doubt, debate, theses and antitheses.

I say with conviction "long live science"! And I say it forcefully. Without science we would not have the well-being of today and above all there would still be several diseases that have afflicted humanity for centuries. But be careful to consider it infallible and, above all, to transform it into dogma . Otherwise it reproduces the monsters of the past.
