China lays the foundations for an $18 billion nuclear power plant

Work has begun on the first unit of the $18 billion Lianjiang nuclear power plant in southeast China's Guangdong province. The announcement was made on Sunday by its owner, State Power Investment Corporation (SPIC).

Lianjiang will have six CAP1000 reactors, a Chinese adaptation of the Westinghouse AP1000 pressurized water design. Once completed, it is expected to generate more than 70 billion kilowatt-hours of energy per year, enough to power an industrial city of about 6 million people. After all, each reactor has a power of 1000 Mw/h.

The station is expected to reduce China's coal consumption by more than 20 million tons per year and reduce carbon dioxide emissions by more than 52 million tons. The project is expected to be completed in 2028 and last until 2088.

The site will be the first to be equipped with super-large cooling towers and a seawater recirculation system.

According to SPIC, pouring of the first concrete for the foundation of the Unit 1 nuclear island was completed on September 29, seven hours ahead of schedule.

SPIC is a Fortune 500 company and one of the top five electricity producers in China, with a total installed capacity of 117 GW. It was formed in 2015 by the merger of China Power Investment Corporation and State Nuclear Power Technology Corporation.

Meanwhile, China is the leader in the world's development of nuclear energy, with 21 nuclear reactors currently under construction domestically. In the meantime, a new generation of small-sized reactors, the SMRs, for which there is strong international demand, is also being developed due to strong demand.

So China develops energy, among other things by decarbonizing, a number of nuclear power plants that Europe can only imagine. The EU discusses and taxes, without managing to reach any results, Italy has delegated everything to the EU. What can go wrong?
