Equinor expands into Norwegian offshore wind

Norwegian energy multinational Equinor plans to participate in its country's first offshore wind tender, Equinor Chief Executive Anders Opedal told Reuters on Friday.

“We are currently working to be as competitive as possible in this space,” the CEO told Reuters on the sidelines of the third-quarter earnings presentation.

The race begins with pre-qualification and "then we'll see what happens", he added.

Norway announced the first tenders for offshore wind areas in March this year, as the Norwegian government takes a big step towards its ambition of awarding areas for 30,000 MW of offshore wind by 2040.

The Ministry of Petroleum and Energy has announced a competition for project areas for offshore renewable energy production in two areas of the Norwegian continental shelf – Sørlige Nordsjø II and Utsira Nord.

Prequalification bids for Sørlige Nordsjø II must be submitted by November 15, while the deadline for Utsira Nord has been postponed indefinitely, pending clarification of issues relating to the competition rules of the European Free Trade Association ( EFTA).

Equinor is very active in the offshore wind sector with operations and development plans in the US and Europe, especially the UK.

Earlier this month, the world's largest offshore wind farm, the Dogger Bank Wind Farm in UK waters, achieved first power and began sending electricity to the UK national grid, the project's developers said, including Equinor.

“A renewable megaproject like Dogger Bank provides an industrial wind hub in the heart of the North Sea, playing an important role in the UK's ambitions for offshore wind and supporting its net zero ambitions,” Opedal said at the time of Equinor.

While the UK and developers have hailed the milestone power of the world's largest offshore wind farm, the current regulatory and commercial landscape for offshore wind faces headwinds in the UK and globally.
