Five psychological disorders often mistaken for problems related to the world of work

Man at work

A recent study conducted by Serenis, a mental wellbeing platform, revealed that the vast majority of patients entering psychotherapy to address work-related difficulties do not receive diagnostic confirmation for such issues.

According to this internal survey conducted by Serenis on over 3,000 participants, only 20% of patients who enter psychotherapy due to problems at work therefore receive a related diagnosis. It is interesting to note that the majority of this group is represented by women (67%) and the age group most involved is between 25 and 35 years (46%), while only 9% of individuals over 45 have disorders related at work.

But how do you understand if the problem is really work?

It is interesting that we tend to identify the cause of our malaise in work. To help people recognize and distinguish different pathologies, Martina Migliore , Director of Training and Development at Serenis, lists 5 ailments often mistaken for work-related pathologies:

  1. Obsessive-Compulsive Disorders: People tend to overestimate their burden of responsibility and fear catastrophic consequences if they fail.
  2. Pathological perfectionism : Professionals with this disorder set unattainable standards, tying their personal worth to performance. This can create insurmountable problems when you have less productive days or negative feedback.
  3. Depression: General lack of motivation and chronic fatigue are common symptoms. Work rhythms can become unsustainable, increasing the perception of inadequacy and lack of self-confidence.
  4. Social phobia: Fear of judgment from others and discomfort in confronting colleagues and superiors can indicate this disorder. The compulsion to interact with others can become a highly distressing experience.
  5. Attention Deficit Disorder (ADHD): Often undiagnosed in adults, ADHD can create difficulties organizing work. Work demands can become a complex task for someone with this disorder.

“Often it is about ineffective anxiety management, obsessive problems that increase the workload excessively and make one perceive an abnormal responsibility compared to the real tasks, or poor concentration ability and impulsivity not diagnosed in childhood which make work organization very difficult”, explains Martina Migliore .

If you suspect a work-related condition, the first thing to do for mental well-being is to seek advice from a specialist. Psychotherapists can offer support, diagnosis and specific treatments within a process of discovery of the origin of the malaise.
