Gas reserves in Europe: they do not increase despite greater supplies

As reported by the Russian business daily Kommersant , the level of reserves in Gazprom's gas storage facilities not only does not increase, but even decreases, despite the growth in physical supplies of Russian gas to Europe. The filling level of the company's storage facilities in Europe remains three times below the EU average and this year it is physically impossible to catch up, although Gazprom explains that it is sending more gas, but that in the three storage facilities it is not it is the only one to send gas.

Gazprom's largest underground gas storage facilities (UGS) in Europe – Rehden and Jemgum in Germany, Haidach in Austria – have not yet switched to intensive injection mode, i.e. accumulation of stocks. Their reserves are at a critically low level. As ordered by Putin, Gazprom should have stepped up pumping in European UGS plants from 8 November, immediately after filling Russian storage facilities. But there are problems:

  • according to European underground gas storage operators, only 2.8 million cubic meters of gas were pumped in Rehden on 9 and 10 November (the level of its reserves is 9.58%), from Jemgum (87, 4%) and Haidach (54.2%). selection is underway since 8 November
  • The average level of stocks for all storage facilities in the EU, according to AGSI +, is 75.3% and stocks have already begun to be withdrawn;
  • Another Gazprom storage facility, Bergermeer in the Netherlands, is 30.71% full although increasing
  • At the same time, on November 9, Gazprom announced that it had approved and started the implementation of the gas pumping plan at its European storage facilities.

The scarce reserves at Gazprom's UGS plants in Europe are linked, among other things, to the August accident at Gazprom's gas condensate preparation plant in Novy Urengoy. This reduced the contribution to the Yamal-Europe pipeline (minus 35-50 million cubic meters per day), so much so that, in order to fulfill the contracts, Gazprom had to draw from its own reserves in storage. This explains why, despite everything, Gazprom reserves are now dangerously low just when they start using them to cope with the cold.

Even in the event that Gazprom operates with all its good will, time is now limited to meet European energy needs. We warmly thank the Commission and the majority of the central countries, Germany in the lead, who have tied the old continent hand and foot to a monopoly supplier of a single country, without investing in other energy sources or other supplies.
