Google makes a better AI than ChatGPT that composes music

Google has created a new artificial intelligence (AI) system called MusicLM that can produce music of any genre starting from a text description.

However, according to some media, the tech giant has chosen not to make the system available to the public for ethical reasons.

For me it's a bigger thing than ChatGPT. Google almost solved music generation, I'd say,” Keunwoo Choi, an AI scientist at the Gaudio Lab, wrote on Twitter on Friday. While MusicLM isn't the first generative AI system for music, it is the first to create music with "high fidelity" and complex composition, the algorithm is able to produce songs that make sense for descriptions of "remarkable complexity" after being trained on a dataset of 280,000 hours of music.

The system can be based on existing melodies, whether they are whistled, hummed, sung or played on an instrument. According to Google researchers, it can also take a series of sequentially written descriptions and turn them into a musical “story” or narrative. Furthermore, MusicLM can be directed by a combination of images and captions, or it can produce music “played” by a certain type of instrument in a particular style. Practically it is able, theoretically, to replace most of the composers of soundtracks. Samples show that it is capable of being on the level of so many modern mundane mysics.

While the system is technically capable of synthesizing vocals, the results are less than ideal and have problems such as distorted samples.

The main problem for Google is the possibility that MusicLM uses training data that contains copyrighted material in the songs it produces. In one experiment, researchers found that 1% of the music produced by the system directly copied the songs it had been trained on, thus infringing copyrights.

That figure is high enough that the company is hesitant to release MusicLM in its current form, TechCrunch reported on Friday. The researchers highlighted the need for more future efforts to address these risks related to music generation and underlined the risk of potential misappropriation
It's not the first time that AI-generated music has given rise to legal problems.

Jay-Z's company filed a copyright complaint against Vocal Synthesis in 2020, after the YouTube channel used AI to produce Jay-Z's renditions of songs like Billy's "We Didn't Start the Fire" Joel.

In a white paper, Eric Sunray, current legal intern at the Music Publishers Association, argues that AI music generators like MusicLM infringe copyright by weaving "tapestry of coherent audio" with the compositions they consume during training, according to as reported by TechCrunch.
