Microsoft hacked by a group that asks “Weird Questions”

Microsoft is investigating whether an "extortion-focused hacker group" has gained access to its internal systems, according to an article published Monday morning in Vice .

The group in question, LAPSUS $, had previously compromised companies such as Ubisoft and Nvidia. In the case of Nvidia, the group demanded a ransom asking the company to "unlock aspects of its graphics cards to make them more suitable for cryptocurrency mining." A bunch of ransomware, but very peculiar.

So far, the group hasn't made any requests to Microsoft, at least officially. But over the weekend, the group posted images of what Vice said "appeared to be a Microsoft developer account within its Telegram channel." The shot appeared to come from an Azure DevOps account and showed projects called “Bing_UX”, “Bing-Source” and “Cortana”, all to demonstrate the effectiveness of its penetration.

The terms "mscomdev", "microsoft" and "msblox" were also included in the screenshot.

The image was deleted shortly after it was posted, with a channel administrator writing, "Deleted for now, but will be posted back later."

Microsoft commented that they are "aware of the claims" and are "investigating".

The group said earlier this month that it was recruiting employees from companies like Microsoft. They also listed Apple and IBM as the company they were looking for insiders to work with to hack their systems.

In the past 3 months alone, the group has "violated Brazil's Ministry of Health, a slew of Brazilian and Portuguese companies, and then Nvidia and Samsung," the report wrote. They also took credit for hacking Ubisoft earlier this month. Yet, more than money, they are demanding changes in company policies.
