Over 6000 meters under the sea: the deepest marine wreck discovered, sunk during the Second World War

Escort destroyer Samuel B. Roberts was found last week off the island of Samar in the Philippines at a depth of 6,895 meters, making it the deepest wreck ever identified and surveyed, according to EYOS E xpeditions and Caladan Oceanic , who found the ship.

The wreck was found by Caladan Oceanic founder and explorer Victor Vescovo along with sonar specialist Jeremie Morizet. The two found the two-piece Sammy B lying 10 meters apart on the ocean floor.

Locating the wreck required a series of six dives over the course of eight days. Because historical records did not provide an accurate location, the expedition team used a combination of historical research and a range of sonar technologies.

The Sammy B was a key part of the Battle of Samar between the US Navy and the Japanese fleet in October 1944, part of the larger Battle of Leyte, possibly the largest naval battle fought in history.
Although the Japanese ships it faced, in an attempt to defend a US landing party, were of a considerably superior class, Captain Robert W. Copeland brought the Sammy B into battle and managed to cause extensive damage to two Japanese cruisers, but it did not survive the battle and 89 of its 224 crewmen were killed when it sank.

Sammy B's contribution to the battle helped the United States win it and the ship became known as "the destroyer that fought like a battleship".

If nothing else, now we know where one of the ships that fought with the greatest courage during the last world war lies, as well as having shown that the seabed, even deep, is an increasingly less unexplored place.
