Peace Index: Iceland the most peaceful country, Afghanistan the most hostile

The 2023 edition of the Global Peace Index published by the Institute for Economics and Peace found that the level of global peace has declined for the 13th time in the past 15 years.

The index ranks levels of peace using 23 qualitative and quantitative indicators in 163 states and independent territories, covering 99.7% of the world's population. This time, peace has worsened in 79 countries, while the situation has improved in 84.

As Katharina Buchholz of Statista reports, Iceland is once again the country in first place for peace in 2023, a position it has held since 2008. At the top of the index are added New Zealand, Ireland, Denmark, Austria and Singapore. The United States, on the other hand, managed only 131st place. Afghanistan is at the bottom of the index, preceded by Yemen and Syria.

Kazakhstan, Oman and Côte d'Ivoire have gained the most positions this year compared to 2022. Last year Kazakhstan was on the list of the most deteriorated countries following violent unrest, but it has recovered its losses. Eswatini, on the other hand, appeared among the biggest losers for the second consecutive year due to the violence accompanying the anti-monarchist protests. While not among the major bulls, India appeared in the 'medium' category after previously being classified as 'low'.

Due to the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, the country has dropped 17 places to 153rd place in 2022 and 157th place in 2023.

As Ukraine has been ranked poorly for years due to the conflict in eastern Ukraine that preceded the Russian invasion, other countries have worsened in the index even more.

The nations that lost the most spots in 2023 were Ecuador, Equatorial Guinea and Sri Lanka.

The latter lost its fast-growing status in 2022, as a successful security and counter-terrorism program was followed by economic decline, violent protests and the ousting of the government last July.

France appears stable, but outside the first two categories of the most peaceful countries. After all, what has been happening in recent nights is an indication of a situation that is anything but peaceful.
