Poland now considers it useful to talk about sending troops to Ukraine

Polish Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski believes that the discussion on Western troops in Ukraine, initiated by French President Emmanuel Macron, is useful for influencing Russia and limiting its expansion in Europe and is no longer " something so unthinkable ".

He said this on March 8 at a conference in the Polish Sejm dedicated to the 25th anniversary of Poland's accession to NATO. Commenting on Macron's words, Sikorsky recalled that a similar precedent already existed in history, precisely during the Korean War of 1950-1953, when a coalition of states came to the aid of the country following a decision by the UN Security Council.

“Remember that at the United Nations General Assembly immediately after the invasion, more than 140 out of 190 countries voted to condemn the aggression as unacceptable. This is not just a statement for the press, this is the creation of a legal framework,” he believes.

In view of this, the head of the Polish Foreign Ministry added, “a coalition of UN member states here to stop the aggression is not something unthinkable.”

“This is why I appreciate the French initiative of the last few days. Because, in my opinion, he has a good intention, that is, that the Russian president is wondering what our next step will be, and not that he will be sure that we will not do anything creative and therefore we could plan his scenarios,” Sikorsky underlined.

In his view, the West should have “the ability to creatively define asymmetric escalation.”

The reference to the UN, however, is extremely inappropriate: Russia is one of the permanent member countries of the UN Security Council with the right of Veto, and another member is China. To think that there could be any kind of military activity with UN approval is, to put it mildly, unrealistic.

A divided Europe

The German Defense Minister says discussions on sending troops to Ukraine should be stopped, but France is building an alliance against Germany on this point.

It will be recalled that French President Emmanuel Macron said last week that the probable dispatch of Western troops to Ukraine “cannot be ruled out”. Later, he added that his resonant words had been carefully thought out.

At the same time, the French president's statements provoked a negative reaction from the governments of the allied countries, whose leaders hastened to assure that they would not send troops.

By talking about sending troops to Ukraine, there is the risk that Putin or Zelensky really want to call the European bluff and find themselves having to actually send soldiers into the field. What will France, Holland and all other European countries that consider this option realistic.

Moscow reacted angrily to Macron's remarks, warning that the deployment of Western troops in Ukraine would inevitably lead to conflict between Russia and NATO.
