Russian gas: Serbia reaches a convenient three-year agreement with Moscow

While the European Union struggles to find ways to import less gas from Russia, Serbia has reversed the European trend: President Alexander Vucic today announced a new three-year gas import agreement with Gazprom.

" What I can tell you is that we have agreed on the main elements that are very favorable for Serbia ," Vucic told the media after a telephone conversation with his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin.

We agreed to sign a three-year contract, which is the first element of the contract that suits the Serbian side very well ,” said Vucic.

Despite being surrounded by an EU that is increasingly aggressive towards Moscow, with five sanctions packages approved and the sixth on the way, Serbia keeps its friendship with Moscow alive, making relations with the EU, in which it has applied for membership, more complex. .

Currently, Serbia receives Russian gas through a pipeline passing through Bulgaria. Gazprom suspended shipments to Bulgaria itself in late April after Sofia refused to pay for gas in rubles. On that occasion, the Russian side warned that if Bulgaria tried to steal gas destined for Serbia, it would have to pay for it. At the same time Serbia borders with Hungary, which has excellent relations with Russia, and this could, in the future, offer an alternative transit route. After all, the EU cannot block goods in transit to a third country.

With this agreement Serbia has secured an important competitive advantage vis-à-vis its EU neighbors which will certainly benefit its industry.
