Sirius 23, the Russian isolation experiment to prepare for interplanetary travel, has started

Six Russian volunteers have embarked on a year-long simulated space mission as part of the SIRIUS project which aims to study the effects of long-term isolation on human health and performance.

The SIRIUS-23 crew entered their mock spacecraft on Nov. 14, at the Institute for Biomedical Problems (IBMP) in Moscow, where they will live and work in a confined environment for 360 days. IBMP is a renowned research institute that has been conducting experiments on human space exploration for 60 years.

Predict the conditions of a journey into deep space

The mission will mimic the conditions of a deep space journey, with the crew performing a lunar flyby, multiple moon landings, orbital maneuvers and rover operations on the lunar surface. The crew will also face various technical and psychological challenges, such as equipment malfunctions, communication delays and interpersonal conflicts.

IBMP's isolation experiments made history by having an entirely Russian-speaking crew of four women and two men. The crew is made up of highly trained individuals, including Oleg Orlov, who serves as commander and medic. Anna Kikina, a cosmonaut, is the flight engineer. Daria Zhidova is a researcher and psychologist, while Yevgenia Ilyinskaya is an operator and journalist. Alexander Suvorov is the engineer and pilot, and Maxim Khabarov is the doctor and surgeon. With such a diverse range of skills, the SIRIUS-23 crew is well equipped to handle any challenges that may arise during the mission.

IBMP

The SIRIUS project is a joint initiative of IBMP and NASA's Human Research Program, which has collaborated on insulation research for many years. However, NASA is not participating in the SIRIUS-23 mission, due to budget constraints and other priorities. NASA remains involved in other similar Earth-based projects, such as CHAPEA and HERA, as well as exploring other national and international opportunities, to support its research goals for future human spaceflight missions. We also remember that, due to the conflict in Ukraine, many direct contacts between space agencies have been interrupted.

The SIRIUS project includes four phases, each with increasing duration and complexity. The first phase, SIRIUS-17, lasted 17 days in 2017. The second phase, SIRIUS-19, lasted 120 days in 2019. The third phase, SIRIUS-21, lasted 240 days in 2021. The fourth and final phase , SIRIUS-23, is the longest and most challenging, and will last 360 days in 2023.

The SIRIUS-23 mission represents an incredible opportunity to explore space and gather important information for future missions. The crew will push the boundaries of science and technology while demonstrating the strength and perseverance of humanity. The famous space journeys to Mars, which are often talked about, will however last several months, even if the thrusters used were more efficient than the chemical ones currently in use.
