Start-ups: the biggest new companies of 2021 and where they are located

If many companies start their own path, even innovative, few become "Unicorns", that is, they exceed one billion in capitalization.

There are sensational cases, like those of Epic Games or SpaceX, but many unicorns are companies in the service sector, or B2B, which silently become important for the economic system.

As Visual Capitalist 's Raul Amoros explains below, in total, there are more than 800 unicorn startups globally. Then try to evaluate the companies that have exceeded 10 billion in value.

The world's top unicorns are constantly seeing their ratings change as they enter different funding or maturity rounds.

As of December 2021, there were 35 startups valued at more than $ 10 billion, spread across different countries and sectors.

Many of the most valuable startups are already giants in their fields. For example, social media company Bytedance is the developer of the Douyin video network platform and its international version, TikTok, and has amassed a valuation of $ 140 billion.

Financial services and payment software company Stripe went from a valuation of $ 36 billion to $ 95 billion during the COVID-19 pandemic, as electronic payments became even more essential.

Less universally important names like Swedish fintech Klarna ($ 45.6 billion) and Australian graphic design platform Canva ($ 40.0 billion) are also well known in their respective industries.

These value assessments are often linked to offers from private investors, i.e. they are not yet stock market valuations. Many companies eventually go public, such as electric vehicle maker and competitor Tesla Rivian, which was valued at $ 27.6 billion before it went public on NASDAQ.

The largest startups by sector and country
The analysis of the largest startups in the world by sector shows that technology is still the queen in most investments

Over 77% of unicorns valued at over $ 10 billion

And many of the unicorns classified in the non-tech sectors are still essentially tech companies. In fact, Indonesian parcel logistics and delivery company J&T Express is one of the few unicorns not directly into the technology, although it still uses automated sorting in its warehouses.

It was one of the few startups to come from anywhere other than the United States or China, which together accounted for over 70% of the 35 largest startups. The UK (3) was the second most frequently listed headquarters, while Australia, Brazil, Germany, India and Sweden each had one of these unicorns on the list.

We look forward to the unicorns that will show up in 2022.
