The compulsory vaccination story is not a successful one

Talk Shows are not all bad, they are when they present pre-packaged solutions, and they make the famous “Opinion makers” talk, people who know nothing and therefore feel authorized to talk about everything. In Germany some good talk shows do it, like this “ Hard, but fair ” presented by Welt, with the participation of politicians and experts, on compulsory vaccination.

We will talk about politicians later, instead it was interesting to involve a medical historian, Dr. Mate Thiessen, because the mandatory vaccination campaigns have been around for 150 years now and it would have been obvious to try to understand what happened in the past. He pointed out that the introduction of mandatory smallpox vaccination in Germany was anything but successful. As today there were:

  • demonstrations;
  • a sea of fake certifications;
  • widespread distrust of science;
  • The skeptics simply paid the fine.

On the contrary, optional vaccinations achieved very high vaccination rates, of the order of 90%, with correct communication. The doctor was obviously not opposed to vaccinations, but points out that in the past these were victims of their success, because, by stopping the spread, they made the side effects more evident than those of the disease. We emphasize that we are talking about effective vaccinations, such as smallpox or tuberculosis, not Covid-19 which does not even stop the infection.

Political positions in the German government are divided: the Liberals are against the obligation, the SPD strongly in favor, so probably nothing will be done at the federal level. Participants also talked about using not punishments, but incentives, to push for vaccination. A path followed with some success locally in the US: for example, West Virginia implemented a campaign in June in which it gave a shotgun for each vaccination. Perhaps such a campaign, without firearms, could increase vaccinations even in Italy, if it were based on adequate marketing and a market study. This would have required the government and the media not to view the skeptics as sub-humans, as they actually did. Unfortunately, it's late now.
