Ukraine: Kiev drone attacked radars in the region

State security services in Transnistria , a Russian-backed breakaway region of Moldova, said on Friday that a drone attacked a military unit near the border with Ukraine, causing minor damage to a radar station, but no casualties.

The incident occurred in the Rabnita region, about 6 kilometers from the border with Ukraine, the region's security ministry said, adding that a criminal investigation had been opened. They have not said who they think is behind the alleged attack.

Moldova's Office for Reintegration Policy responded by saying the incident was part of "a pattern of provocations" in Transnistria, designed to "incite panic and tension" and keep attention on the region.

Moldova, like Ukraine, is a candidate country for membership of the European Union and has repeatedly accused Russia of waging a 'hybrid war' against the country, meddling in local elections and running extensive disinformation campaigns to seek to overthrow the government and derail its path to full EU membership. Russia has denied the accusations.

The drone crash came after an empty helicopter at a military installation in Transnistria was destroyed last month in what Transnistrian authorities blamed on being a Ukrainian drone strike, but which Moldovan officials said be a staged explosion to inflame tensions.

While Moldova has not openly accused Russia, it has said that “more such actions are planned by the Russian Federation” in Transnistria.

After a brief war in the early 1990s, Transnistria declared independence from Moldova, where the current pro-Western government has staunchly opposed Russian President Vladimir Putin's war with Ukraine.

Although Transnistria's independence is not recognized by any UN member country, including Russia, the Kremlin-friendly territory has become a source of tension during the war, especially because it is wedged between Moldova and Ukraine and hosts a military base with 1,500 Russian troops. It was not immediately clear whether there were troops at the site of Friday's drone crash.

The breakaway region also made headlines in February, when authorities used a rare meeting of Transnistria's congress to appeal to Moscow for "protection" amid what they said was growing pressure from Moldova. The call was limited to asking Russia to annex the territory, allaying the fears of Moldova, which dismissed the event as propaganda.
