USA: IT WOULD NOT BE THE FIRST TIME THAT A PRESIDENT IS ELECTED WITH FRAUD

If you think the current fight between Trump and Biden is unprecedented in US election history, you are blatantly wrong. There was already a case where the charge was beautifully passed from the loser to the winner.

We are in the nineteenth century, after the Civil War, in a turbulent period in which the South, after the Grant presidency, marked by serious episodes of corruption, by the famous "Carpetbaggers" who administered the south with a certain spirit of robbery, and with the cities of the confederations still occupied by the Unionist army.

In 1878, Ohio governor Rutheford Hayes, a former Union army general, and New York politician Samuel Tilden challenged each other. Tilden had two advantages:

  • he was a Democrat, so he would have received many votes in the south, where the Republicans, Lincoln's successors, were very unpopular;
  • he was from New York, so no one could accuse him of sympathy for secessionists or slaveholders.

The elections were very complex. For example, Colorado, which had just become a state, failed to organize elections and its three representatives were exceptionally nominated by the state assembly. In Florida, Georgia and South Carolina, states of the former Confederacy, they saw their votes, 19 in all, assigned to Hayes on the basis of known electoral fraud. The most sensational case was South Carolina, where 101% of the voters voted for Hayes (Zaia, you will never succeed heheheh) –

In the end, from the point of view of the votes, these were the results

Hayes on the left, Tilden on the right

percentage votes 4,034,311 4,288,546
percentage 47.9% 50.9%

But the mess and fraud had favored Hayes at the state level. The risk was of a rift in the USA, fresh from the Civil War, and all the parties involved knew well what it could mean.

The parties agreed to create an "Electoral Commission" with 7 Republican members, 7 Democrats and the fifteenth the former secretary of justice, esteemed by both sides.
Eventually a compromise was reached. the 19 contested members were granted to Hayes, but he had to make concessions, withdrawing the Unionist army from the cities of the South, from the former Confederation. Without military support the republican state governments established there, in which many representatives were black citizens of the south, could no longer stand up and were in fact overthrown in a very short time. If the compromise of 1877 avoided civil war, it was not without consequences:

  • the Democrats outside the former confederation felt betrayed because the election was taken away from Tilden who had actually won the battle;
  • in the south the black republicans, who had so much hoped for the creation of a true equal society, were betrayed. Their previous maximalism, during the Grant administration, led to a very strong segregationist reaction as soon as the military occupation of the south ended. By the 1900s, much of the civil and political rights of black people had been canceled.

However, in 1880 a commission set up, the Potter commission, which seized 24,000 telegrams (there were no cell phones yet …), many in number. The New York Times was able to decipher a good part of it which showed that both sides had committed fraud anyway.

Tilden attempted to participate in the primary for the 1880 election, but then withdrew. He died in 1886 and on his tomb it is written, as an epitaph " I still believe in the people ": The problem is to believe in politics …

Hayes only made a warrant, refusing to run for a second. His presidency was very difficult: in the south the attempts to defend the black people were overtaken by the new democratic and segregationist governments. There were violent strikes by railway workers that resulted in real riots. Economically, the law banning silver coinage beyond the dollar resulted in counterproductive monetary tightening.
