Venezuela shows off Iranian anti-ship missiles as economic sanctions are about to return

Venezuela recently displayed CM-90 anti-ship missiles purchased from Iran, in a move that could be alarming for the United States amid escalating hostilities between the two countries.

The Venezuelan military announced on April 16 that it had acquired the CM-90 missile, the export variant of the Nasir anti-ship missile (ASM). The new missiles were positioned in the “Agustín Armario” naval base in Puerto Cabello.

On April 16, as part of the anniversary celebrations of the Bolivarian Navy of Venezuela (ABV or Armada Bolivariana de Venezuela), Defense Minister Vladímir Padrino López opened an assembly area for the CM-90 at the naval base . Subsequently, photographs and a video were published online showing Padrino examining several ASMs and related test rigs in containers inside a building.

The CM-90 missiles will presumably be equipped on the Peykaap missile ship, i.e. Iran's Zolfagar ships, which Venezuela purchased last year. With anti-ship missile launchers, torpedo tubes and, in later models, remote weapons stations, these fast, maneuverable ships are armed to the teeth for robust coastal defense.

The CM-90 missile, which debuted in 2022 at the DIMDEX exhibition, is approximately 4.16 meters long, has a diameter of 280 mm and weighs 350 kilograms. Its turbojet engine and active radar guidance system give it a range of approximately 90 kilometers. The range is 90 km and the explosive warhead weighs 130 kg.

According to reports, the Nasir missile, i.e. the ground-launched CM-90, was derived from the existing Nasr missile. However, the Nasr's solid rocket motor was replaced with a turbojet engine and launch booster to make the missiles more agile and lethal. The Nasir reportedly broke cover in Iran in 2017 and has since been integrated into the Iranian Navy.

The unveiling of the CM-90 missile and a workshop for its maintenance comes days after Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro accused the United States of establishing secret bases in the resource-rich Essequibo region, a governed territory from Guyana and fiercely claimed by Venezuela. Guyana is supported by the United States against Venezuela.

“We have confirmation that secret bases of the [US] Southern Command and the CIA have been established in the Essequibo region of Guyana to prepare attacks against the population of southern and eastern Venezuela,” Maduro said.

in the meantime, the period of suspension of sanctions has also ended and, without a renewed decision from the Biden government, economic sanctions on Venezuela will return which, among other things, will lead to the halting of the development of the Venezuelan oil sector by Western multinationals.
