All FCA projects with Engie and Terna on electricity

Not only new models with plugs: FCA steers, with Engie and Terna, on the Vehicle-to-Grid for the exchange of energy between battery-powered vehicles and the electricity grid

Fca, Engie Eps and Terna join forces in the name of sustainable mobility. And of the plug, in particular.

The three companies presented yesterday, at the Heritage Hub headquarters in the Mirafiori district of FCA, the platform with Vehicle-to-Grid technology built at the Turin plant.

The project represents a new step in the transition to the electric of the Italian-American car manufacturer which – specified Pietro Golier, head of Emea for Fiat Chrysler – has already started production of the 500 full electric, 30-40 cars a day.

Let's go step by step.

THE V2G PLATFORM

Let's start from what represents a revolution for the country, from the vehicle to grid, that is the technology that allows vehicles to exchange energy intelligently with the grid.

Fca, Engie and Terna have created a Vehicle-to-Gri d platform at the Mirafiori plant in just 4 months.

THE PLANT

This is a pilot plant which in this first phase relies on 32 V2G columns capable of connecting 64 vehicles. When fully operational, the plant will have to accommodate 700 cars on tap, with an electrical potential of 25 megaWatts.

“We firmly believe in electric mobility and believe that interventions and measures in the short term are essential for an adequate diffusion of the V2G infrastructure”, commented Pietro Golier of FCA.

VEHICLES RESOURCE FOR BACKHOE

The exchange of energy with the grid therefore makes vehicles a resource for the national electricity system managed by Terna, a protagonist and at the same time enabler of the energy transition.

“E-cars represent a very important potential source of energy and a great opportunity to help create a more sustainable and decarbonised electricity system. Furthermore, the intelligent and bidirectional interaction between the car and the grid allows Terna to have more flexibility resources and innovative services which, combined with our distinctive skills, guarantee an increasingly reliable and efficient service management ", said Massimiliano. Garri, Director of Innovation and Digital Solutions for Terna.

ENGIE EPS, THE TECHNICAL CREATOR

The technical implementer of the platform is Engie Eps, a company born from the ashes of Electro Power Systems, a spin off of the Polytechnic of Turin put into liquidation in 2013. In 2018, the French energy company acquired 60%, with a takeover bid . The company, listed in Paris, was worth 180 million euros in 2019, as reported by the Sole 24 Ore .

WHAT ENGIE DID

Engie Italia, as part of the project, has created a huge roof made up of about 12,000 solar panels , which will supply “green” energy to the production and logistics plants. The plant will be able to produce over 6,500 MWh of energy each year, offsetting over 2,100 tons of CO2 emissions per year.

The V2G “will allow the greatest paradigm shift within the electric mobility system and the world's electrical systems. We at Engie Eps are extremely proud to have made it possible by making the energy transition, already unstoppable in itself, finally faster and more sustainable ”, commented Carlalberto Guglielminotti, CEO of Engie Eps.

FCA'S COMMITMENT TO E-MOBILITY

The V2G platform is just one of the projects that FCA is developing in the field of e-mobility, as he recalled, on the occasion of the presentation of the Pietro Golier platform.

FCA has committed to invest 5 billion in Italian plants, two of which in Turin, between Grugliasco and Mirafiori.

THE PRODUCTION OF THE 500 FULL ELECTRIC

And just in Mirafiori, in recent weeks, the production of the electric Fiat 500 has started, which together with the new Maserati models and the battery-powered Jeeps that will be built in Mirafiori represent the plug-in inversion of the car manufacturer.
