All of Leonardo's latest moves in Qatar

Leonardo continues to strengthen in Qatar.

The Italian aerospace and defense group has delivered the first two NH90 NFH naval helicopters to the Qatar Air Force.

The delivery, according to a note , which took place in line with contractual commitments, took place on 31 March during an official ceremony at the Leonardo plant in Venice Tessera in the presence of representatives of the operator, the company and the NHIndustries joint venture.

The event follows the delivery of the first TTH version helicopter for land use, which took place in December 2021 at the Airbus Helicopters plant in Marignane in France, to which the second TTH was added more recently. In fact, the Qatar Air Force is one of the operators to use both versions (TTH and NFH) of the NH90 for various land and sea applications.

Leonardo boasts a significant presence in Qatar.

Just last March 22, on the occasion of Dimdex 2022, the group led by Alessandro Profumo signed a new contract with the Qatari Navy for the development of a Naval Operations Center (NOC) for military service, the first of its kind in the Village.

In addition to the presence in the helicopter sector and naval surveillance, please note that the pilots of the Qatar Air Force use Leonardo's M-346 advanced aircraft for training at the International Flight Training School (Ifts).

All the details.

LEONARDO'S ROLE IN THE NH90 PROGRAM

In Qatar, Leonardo has a significant presence in the helicopter sector: the company is prime contractor for the 28 NH90 program. Therefore the group is responsible for the management of the program, the final assembly and delivery of the 12 NH90 NFH helicopters and the provision of support and training services for crews and maintenance technicians. Operated through the NHIndustries joint venture, the NH90 is the largest military helicopter program in Europe with nearly 470 units in service worldwide and nearly 330,000 flight hours accumulated.

THE OTHER HELICOPTERS CHOSEN BY DOHA

In addition, more than 40 helicopters, including the AW139 and AW189, carry out offshore transport, public services, surveillance, search and rescue and emergency medical services in the country.

WHAT LEONARDO WILL DO FOR THE QATAR NAVY

Recently the group from Piazza Monte Grappa scored another success in the country.

On the occasion of Dimdex 2022, Leonardo signed an agreement with the Qatari Navy (Qatari Emiri Naval Forces – QENF) to develop a Naval Operation Center (NOC). The objective is to guarantee the country the monitoring and full control of territorial waters; Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) and adjacent sea spaces; and to increase cooperation with national maritime safety agencies at the same time.

THE RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE NOC

Therefore the Center will be made up of innovative technologies and systems, as well as the full integration of air and sea components.

Under the agreement, the NOC will oversee the command, control and coordination of operations at sea, allowing the Armed Forces to carry out integrated monitoring, thanks to the high level of cooperation between all the sensors in the field.

THE PRESENCE OF THE FORMER FINMECCANICA IN THE COUNTRY

Finally, Leonardo is playing a key role in the protection of Qatar, where it has been present for almost 25 years. As the group recently recalled , it is present in Qatar with a representative office and a branch in Doha.

Today the pilots of the Air Force of Qatar are already training on Leonardo's M-346 aircraft at the International Flight Training School (IFTS). In the maritime sector, Leonardo is equipping the new ships of the Qatari Navy with its naval capabilities. These range from turnkey combat management systems for all classes of military ships to defense systems.

In addition, Leonardo supplies Qatar with air traffic control radars and main systems for Doha International Airport. The company also builds air traffic and weather management systems for the new Hamad International Airport, considered one of the most advanced in the world. In addition, Qatar's airspace is protected thanks to a Leonardo air defense and surveillance system. The latter is composed of a network of Kronos radars and associated command and control centers. Also noteworthy is Leonardo's contribution to both the airframe and the avionics, including the AESA (Active Electronically Scanned Array) radar of the Eurofighter Typhoon, 24 of which were ordered by Qatar at the end of 2017.
