All the plans of the Chinese Chery in Spain that make Sanchez rejoice

Chery arrives in Spain and intends to proceed at full speed: the first cars will be produced as early as this summer. Some will still have a combustion engine.

The Chinese manufacturer Chery has no intention of losing even a second. After defining the final agreements with the Spanish government for the arrival in the former Nissan factory in the Free Zone of Barcelona, the brand (in negotiations for a long time – still ongoing with the Italian executive) immediately disclosed the first details of its industrial plan involving Spain.

THE MISSED OPPORTUNITY FOR ITALY AND THE SPANISH OPPORTUNITY

Details that are also of close interest to us Italians, not only because they contribute to that invasion of Chinese electric cars that the EU will suffer in the months to come and which risks wiping out all the Western brands well known to us, but also and above all because – as already remembered – Chery, before leaning towards Spain, seemed to have the intention of opening its first European plant in Italy, therefore everything we read in the following paragraphs could have had implications for our economy.

WHAT SANCHEZ SAID

Everyone was there to welcome Chery to Spain, the Minister of Business and Labor of the Generalitat de Catalunya, Roger Torrent, who was the first to confirm the agreement signed with the Chinese via social media, and above all Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez.

“Today we celebrate the agreement between Ebro-EV Motors and Chery to produce vehicles in Barcelona which will create up to 1,200 jobs in the former Nissan factory,” Sanchez tu X wrote.

“This agreement goes beyond a major commercial project – explained the prime minister -. It is a symbol of the reindustrialization of the entire country, of our ability to attract foreign investments, as well as an example of collaboration between public and private". “Thank you – concluded Sanchez – for believing in and helping a great country grow which, as always in its history, gives its best the bigger the challenge.”

WHAT WILL CHERY DO IN SPAIN

As mentioned, everything will focus on the agreement with Ev Motors of the Catalan Ebro group: the two companies will create a joint venture whose majority will be in the hands of the Spanish. The new company, in addition to developing a hi-tech hub for research and development, will produce electric vehicles for the Omoda and Ebro brands. We start already this summer with some vehicles in two versions: EV and endothermic, while the machinery will be replaced in the former Nissan factory (400 million euros will be invested for this purpose).

ASSEMBLY KIT TO PROCEED DURING THE RESTORATION

These are Omoda 5 produced with assembly kits manufactured in China which will allow the renovation work to proceed, alternating the use of the lines. Once fully operational, the factory will have the capacity to churn out 150,000 vehicles a year in 2029, while the roadmap plans to start by reaching 50,000 units in 2027 between two SUVs for the Ebro brand on the Chery platform, an electric pick-up and a battery-powered van based on the Nissan Navara and e-NV200 respectively. On the employment front, as said by Sanchez, the two companies have guaranteed their commitment to reabsorb 1,250 workers once employed by Nissan until the closure of the plant decided in 2021.
