Apple will focus on renewables in Europe

Apple has announced new goals to decarbonise its supply chain and major investments in renewable energy in Europe. All the details

On Tuesday, the technology company Apple announced new and "significant" investments in renewable energy in Europe, also asking its suppliers to decarbonise the production of components destined for the company's iPhones and other electronic devices.

DECARBONIZE THE CHAIN

Apple has achieved carbon neutrality for its global business operations since 2020; now it wants to extend its commitment to its entire supply chain. In this regard, he said it will ask companies in its supply chain each year to report their progress towards net zero CO2 emissions targets for components used in Apple products.

Specifically, the emissions to be reduced will be Scope 1 and Scope 2 . The first are “direct” emissions, ie those generated directly by the company and under its control. The second, on the other hand, are “indirect” emissions, linked to the energy used (for example for lighting and heating buildings).

THE COMMITMENTS OF TSMC AND STMICROELECTRONICS

Apple said more than two hundred suppliers, together worth 70 percent of its direct manufacturing spending, will use clean energy (such as wind and solar) to produce the company. Major suppliers – such as Corning Incorporated, Nitto Denko, SK hynix, STMicroelectronics, TSMC and Yuto – have already pledged to power their Apple production exclusively with renewable energy.

ATTRACT "GREEN FINANCE"

Apple CEO Tim Cook said that "we want to be a ripple in the pond that creates a bigger change." By reducing its carbon footprint, the company – like many other large companies – aims to align itself with the global energy transition and the new “climate” sensitivity of finance, in order to attract investments and avoid regulatory pressures.

INVESTMENTS IN RENEWABLES IN EUROPE

Apple also said it plans to build wind and solar power plants in Europe, each with capacities ranging from 30 to 300 megawatts, with the aim of powering all of its devices on the continent with low-carbon electricity.

According to the company, the investments will allow it to add new renewable capacity to the electricity grid for 3,000 gigawatt hours per year, reducing Apple's carbon footprint associated with charging its devices by 22 percent.
