Because the alliances of the Meloni government in Europe must be chosen with acumen

Not all the moves of the Meloni government in the European Union seem forward-looking. Here because. Federico Guiglia's notebook

If foreign policy is the country's projection in the world, the government shouldn't doubt how to behave. We are among the leading industrial powers on the planet, we export excellence and quality everywhere, and therefore it is farsighted that Giorgia Meloni will dedicate hours of her time, during the Bali G20 meeting on climate change, to meet and discuss with Joe Biden and Xi Jinping, the presidents of the two superpowers.

But we are also at the center of the Mediterranean and founders of what in the meantime has become the European Union, of which we contribute to the budget and for which we represent a recognized and loved nation for a unique and universal historical, artistic and landscape heritage.

Therefore, it is short-sighted that on immigration, due to inexperience or an out-of-time electoral campaign, the government provoked or got dragged into a backyard brawl – the European courtyard, that is, at home – with France. Because, in doing so, acting as an "opposition government" to this Europe, we are taking the wrong side, even though we are right.

The reason in denouncing the indifference with which the EU, unlike Italy, refuses to face a painful phenomenon for those who emigrate, difficult for those who welcome and destined to last a long time for everyone.

However, it is not by signing a document with Greece, Malta and Cyprus, the first countries welcoming and suffering from uncontrolled migration from Africa by sea, that Italy will be able to best assert its correct point of view.

Of course, Serie A and Serie B cannot exist among the 27 EU nations.

But Italy's role is exercised at the head of the championship in common, as the famous photos of Draghi, Macron and Scholz on the train to Ukraine have testified in an exemplary way. Nor can it be said that Draghi's differences with Scholz were irrelevant, if one thinks of the battle that our former prime minister waged for weeks to convince the Germans to set a ceiling on the price of gas.

Treating as equals does not mean giving up one's own and different position. It means understanding that great challenges are fought and won together. Especially if they are European challenges, that is, in the family: a phone call between Mattarella and Macron was enough to lower the fever between Rome and Paris.

Like in Bali and like on the train to Ukraine : this is the right direction for Italian foreign policy up to the next stop, and beyond.
