Because the Rimini Meeting has nothing to do with Giussani's CL

What is wrong with the current Rimini Meeting according to the blog of the vaticanist Aldo Maria Valli

The Rimini Meeting was something unique in the Catholic panorama not only in Italy, but in the world, and in the whole history of the Church: a week of events, meetings, exhibitions, debates (with an average of almost one million visitors every year) which brought themes, stories and works hitherto little known outside the ecclesial circle to public visibility. With Fr Giussani and his holy "fixation" of the public presence in every area of society, Catholics have found courage and vivacity, and they have emerged from that sort of inferiority complex that had characterized them for centuries. A meeting that has made millions of people understand and experience, over the decades, how faith generates works and makes life beautiful and full of charm.

Unfortunately that Meeting is no more. There is a pale heir of his, detached from the Giussanian charism that originated it, as indeed the Movement of Communion and Liberation. But while CL is trying to return to its origins with the new presidency of Davide Prosperi, after the disastrous fifteen years of Don Juliàn Carrón, the Meeting remained firmly in the hands of the followers of the Spanish priest, thanks to a statute of the Meeting Foundation for Friendship among the peoples which provides that the Board of Directors is appointed by the majority (three out of five members) by the partner partners, specifically: Foundation for Subsidiarity; Association of the Company of Works; Italian association of cultural centers. The first two realities refer to Giorgio Vittadini, a historical figure of CL, very close to Don Carrón, while the Aic is chaired by Letizia Paoli. Other prominent figures of the Meeting are the president Bernard Scholz, formerly number one of the CdO, and the vice-president of the Meeting, the Florentine university professor Andrea Simoncini.

In summary: the Rimini Meeting is organized by organizations and people who, for years now, have had a cultural approach and an ecclesial line that clashes with the history from which they come. As the journalist and writer Antonio Socci, one of Fr Giussani's “sons” rightly wrote in a post: “Fr Giussani in 2003 invited us not to be courtiers of history. A lesson unheard by his parents. In fact, after sixteen years of Carronian devastation, CL is non-existent, reduced to making the clacque of Power ".

Also during this edition, apart from some exhibitions (particularly beautiful those dedicated to Rosario Livatino, to the Gulags, to Fr Giussani for the centenary of his birth and the one curated by the Missionaries of San Carlo on the Book of Tobias) and some meetings, the usual cultural setting: open microphones, without contradiction and without judgment, for the representatives of Power (there was half the Draghi government), on the other hand a dangerous ambiguity symbolized by the great hall dedicated to the 2030 Agenda, which is an agenda full of objectives that clash with the social doctrine of the Church.

Many CL people ask themselves, in these hours and in these days on the various social groups and private chats, what sense has a Meeting so disconnected from its history and from the charism of Fr Giussani, and they wonder why the Fraternity of Communion is not directly and Liberation to organize it. The standing ovation for Mario Draghi angered several amazed people who wonder what links the Giussanian experience to a premier so far from what the CL world used to be.

In the meantime, Fr Carrón has been touring all the CL communities in Italy for over two months, and this summer he took part in several holidays and summer camps of the now sparse CLU university groups. An open challenge to the new president Prosperi, despite the fact that on 10 June the cardinal prefect of the Pontifical Council for the Laicis, Kevin Farrell, addressed a strong reference to Carrón himself, without mentioning him explicitly, accusing him of having spread "a doctrine of the succession of the charism gravely contrary to the teachings of the Church ", and other serious shortcomings, together with those who shared with him responsibility in leading the Movement:" A climate of mistrust of the Church and resistance to its indications; a strong personalism; internal divisions and manipulative logics; a broad dissent regarding the interventions and decisions of the ecclesiastical authority ”, are the harsh accusations of Cardinal Farrell. In the meantime, sources inside CL tell us, the old Carronian guard hopes for a rapid ascent to the throne of Peter of Cardinal Zuppi, a personal friend of the Spanish prelate, in the hope of seeing the rules on Movements desired by Pope Francis canceled in 2021.
