China is increasingly accelerating on artificial intelligence. Here's Yoyo

The Chinese brand Honor, a spin-off of Huawei, not only aims to erode the market of Apple and Samsung's Galaxy, but also presents a new AI: Yoyo

Two years after the independence of the parent company Huawei, Honor not only aims at Europe, but also intends to have its say in the sea of artificial intelligence. While Apple struggles, forgetting to update its Siri according to the highest standards guaranteed by the latest algorithms cooked up by software houses, another aggressive Chinese company stands out on the smartphone market with a brand new artificial intelligence: Yoyo.

WHAT HONOR IS AND WHAT IT DOES

Yoyo is the latest hi-tech innovation developed in the company led by Honor CEO George Zhao , who repeats like a mantra: "Our smartphones built on a human-centric philosophy". To be precise, these are top-of-the-range smartphones (Honor Magic 6, together with the Xiaomi 14, will be among the first to exploit the potential of the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 processor). Therefore devices capable of worrying the aforementioned Apple as well as Samsung's Galaxy.

THE LONG RUN (TOWARD EUROPE)

In China, despite the crisis in the sector meaning that, for the first time since 2013, sales fell below 300 million units in 2022 according to data from the Canalys company, Honor has never stopped growing, until to reach second position, achieved following leaps of 34 percent year on year.

WHAT WE KNOW ABOUT THE NEW SMARTPHONE (AND YOYO)

Apparently, Honor Magic 6, in addition to being among the first smartphones to exploit the potential of the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 processor, will also have a virtual assistant animated by AI algorithms. Yoyo, exactly.

The company revealed that it will integrate Yoyo generative AI without the need for third-party apps. In some teasers, the Asian giant showed the possibilities of the Llm (Large Language Model) model: for example, you can ask the AI, by giving the command via chat or voice, to create a short film from the photos in the Gallery, but also search for content on the web to download.

The Chinese company explains that, unlike the most common LLMs which are made up of publicly accessible data sets, Honor's works mainly on the phone, drawing from the internet only when necessary. In short, contrary to the common use of cloud-based Large Language Models, Honor's chatbot will be incorporated directly into the phone, therefore being able to work where there is no field but above all guaranteeing truly high performance.

THE PARTNERSHIP WITH QUALCOMM

Honor and Qualcomm Technologies, the two tech giants say, have worked together focusing on three key areas: performance, efficiency and user privacy. The joint efforts have led to optimizations that allow the mobile platform to take advantage of the model effectively without drawing excessive amounts of power, as well as data protection that ensures data remains safe on the device.

CONTROL OF YOUR SMARTPHONE WITH YOUR EYES

But above all there will be a lot of talk about Honor Magic 6 between now and the next few months as it will be the first mobile phone that can be controlled with a smartphone (similar technologies, however, had already been developed although never made so mainstream, usually intended for those who needed of diversified accessibility).

By focusing your gaze on the notification, the sensors will recognize your attention as an action and will automatically open the corresponding app in response. We have already mentioned the fact that the technology exploited by the new, aggressive Asian brand makes it a possible thorn in Apple's side. Also in this case, let's not forget that gaze tracking should be present in the Apple Vision Pro. The challenge for market supremacy, therefore, seems to be just beginning, and will be played between China, Korea and the United States.
