Electric cars start racing in Europe. Jato report

In 2022 there will be a boom in EV car registrations throughout Europe… with the exception of Italy. Tesla and Volkswagen run, surprisingly Asians at the bottom of the top ten. The numbers and curiosities of Jato Dynamics

Europe is preparing for the energy transition. While Brussels lowers the bar to endothermic engines, which will stop starting in 2035, sales of electric cars are intensifying, setting new records in 2022: BEV registrations amounted to 1.56 million units, with a growth of 29 % compared to 2021. The Jato Dynamics report reveals it. (Read also: Who sells the most electric cars in the world )

60% of electrified models sold last year were at phev and bev. And if it was thought that with the advent of plug-in models, SUVs, which have always been considered large and polluting, would disappear, nothing is more wrong given that they represent 51% of BEVs. On the other hand, there was a sharp decline in plug-ins, which corresponded to the growth of full electric vehicles: 14 of every 100 cars sold in Europe last year were powered by batteries alone.

THE BEST-SELLING ELECTRIC CARS ACCORDING TO JATO

According to Jato's report, two Teslas dominate the ranking of the most sold electric cars: the Model Y with 137,000 units equal to a 424% increase and the Model 3 with 91,500 sales, down 35% compared to 141,000 units in 2021.

In third place is a model of the European House more than any other engaged in the field of electric mobility: Volkswagen with 67,500 ID.4 equal to + 23% while the ID.3 climbs into fifth position with 53,000 sales (- 24%), after the Fiat 500e with 66,000 registrations, up 49%. The New Fiat 500 is confirmed as the best-selling electric car in Italy also at the beginning of this year, with a share of 16.3%, equal to 1.6 points more than in 2022.

In sixth position we find the Skoda Enyaq with 49,568 units sold (+12%) which preceded the Romanian Dacia Spring with 48,535 units (+76%) and, surprisingly, also the Peugeot e-208 with 46,616 registrations (+10%) . The Asians currently close the ranking with the Koreans Hyundai Kona with 41,226 sales (-4%) and Kia Niro with 38,522 units, down 18%. But the 2023 market could be upset by the arrival of numerous Chinese brands at budget prices.

WHERE ARE THE MOST ELECTRIC VEHICLES SOLD?

The countries closest to electric mobility remain those of the North: Norway in 2022 accounted for the record market share of 79%. Follows, albeit far behind, Sweden with 33%, then it's the turn of the Netherlands with 23%, Denmark with 21% and Finland, Germany and Switzerland tied with 18% share. Italy is last with 3.7%. Moreover, our country in 2022 was also the only one in Europe to record a contraction of 0.9%.
