Fincantieri, as Vard flutters

The Norwegian Vard, a subsidiary of Fincantieri, spurs off-shore wind power. New contract for a total value of 140 million euros

Fincantieri scores another important order in the offshore renewable energy sector thanks to the subsidiary Vard.

Vard has signed contracts with the Norwegian Norwind Offshore for the design and construction of 2 Commissioning Service Operations Vessels, with options for another 2 vessels of the same type, and for the sale and conversion of a Platform Supply Vessel, which will become a Service Operation Vessel. This was announced by the Trieste shipbuilding group with a note .

The contracts for the 3 stationary ships have a total indicative value of 140 million euros.

This is the third offshore wind contract concluded by Vard since the beginning of the year.

Last April Vard received the order for the construction of 3 SOV units to serve the Dogger Bank wind farm in the North Sea. The latter, once completed, will be the largest in the world. The activities of some of the major operators in the sector in the world converge on this site, including SSE Renewables, Equinor and Eni.

In August the company signed the contract for the design and construction of 2 Construction Service Operation Vessels (CSOV) for the Norwegian company Rem Offshore.

Just a year ago, the Fincantieri subsidiary made its entry into the renewable energy sector, alongside Mol and Ttm, two of the largest shipping companies in the world.

All the details.

WHAT THE NEW CONTRACT INCLUDES: THE CREATION OF TWO COMMISSIONING SERVICE OPERATIONS VESSEL

The Commissioning Service Operations Vessels are based on the Vard 4 19 design, tailor-made for support and maintenance activities around the world at offshore wind farms.

The first ship for Norwind will be fitted out and delivered in Norway in the second quarter of 2023. The hull will be built instead in Braila, Romania. The second ship will be built and delivered in Vung Tau, Vietnam, with delivery scheduled for the third quarter of 2024.

THE CONVERSION OF A PLATFORM SUPPY VESSEL

The third unit, a Vard-owned Platform Supply Vessel, has been in operation in Asia and Australia and will now travel to Brattvaag, Norway for an extensive conversion and outfitting operation. The ship will be delivered in the second quarter of 2022 as a Service Operation Vessel.

WHAT THE NORWEGIAN NORWIND OFFSHORE DOES

Norwind Offshore is a newly established company that will offer specialized vessels for operations related to the development and support of the offshore wind industry. It has a long history in the offshore and maritime sector, during which it has developed a strong relationship with Vard through the construction of a wide range of advanced offshore units.

VARD STRENGTHENS ITSELF IN THE RENEWABLE OFFSHORE SECTOR

Listed on the Singapore stock exchange and controlled by Fincantieri since January 2013, Vard Group is one of the world leaders in the construction of specialized vessels for the offshore market, according to the company's website .

This latest contract allows Vard to strengthen its position in this particular sector of the offshore market and in that of special high-performance vessels even in the most demanding environmental conditions.

The offshore renewable energy sector is in a transition phase from a European-only industry to a global market. Having already developed numerous concepts of this type of unit – explains the Trieste shipbuilding group -, Vard will be able to exploit the growing trend of the sector, in which important activities are emerging that are preparing to be launched both in Asia and North America, in addition to a still high level of investment in Europe.

THE DIVERSIFICATION STRATEGIES CONTINUES

Fincantieri's diversification strategy for the Norwegian subsidiary therefore continues.

At the beginning of August, the Fincantieri subsidiary delivered “Le Commandant Charcot”, a cruise ship destined for polar voyages, to the French shipping company Ponant.

It is the first ever cruise ship with hybrid LNG-powered icebreaker technology for polar travel. The hybrid electric exploration vessel with LNG propulsion was developed by Ponant, Stirling Design International, Aker Arctic and Vard.
