From the launch of the Viking Neptune cruise ship to the start of production of the first new submarine for the Navy at the Muggiano plant. Here are the latest moves by Fincantieri

From the launch of the Viking Neptune cruise ship to the start of work on the new submarine for the Navy. Fincantieri has already pressed the accelerator at the beginning of the year in both the civil and military sectors.

The Trieste shipbuilding group has started work on the first new generation submarine for the Italian Navy. Production activities relating to the U212 NFS (Near Future Submarine) acquisition program started at the Muggiano (La Spezia) plant on 11 January.

On 13 January the “Viking Neptune” group led by Giuseppe Bono was launched at the Ancona plant. This is the new Fincantieri cruise ship for the Viking shipping company.

And again for Viking, at the end of 2021 Fincantieri, through its subsidiary Vard , had delivered “Viking Octantis”, the first of two expedition cruise units, to its shipyard in S viknes, Norway.

All the details on Fincantieri's latest moves.

WORK ON THE U212 NFS PROGRAM BEGINS

Just a year ago Fincantieri signed as prime contractor with Occar ('International Organization for Cooperation for Armaments), the contract for the construction of 2 new generation submarines with the option for a further 2 units, as part of the program U212NFS (Near Future Submarine) acquisition of the Navy.

The total value of the order is 2.3 billion. The first tranche will have a value of 1.35 billion and will concern the construction of the first two submarines.

The U212NFS program – explains the note – responds to the need to ensure adequate surveillance and control capabilities of underwater spaces, considering the complex operational scenarios that will characterize the future of operations in the underwater sector and the approaching end of the operational life of the four units. of the “Sauro” class currently in service.

The first two deliveries are expected in 2027 and 2029.

FINCANTIERI WILL BUILD A SECOND LSS UNIT FOR THE NAVY

Furthermore, again for the Navy, Fincantieri will build a second LSS (Logistic Support Ship) for the Navy, sister ship of the Volcano.

On December 20, the Temporary Business Grouping (RTI) led by Fincantieri signed a contract with Occar for the construction of a second logistic support unit for the Navy, as part of a program that also includes a third.

The LSS, explains a note , will be entirely built and delivered at the Castellammare di Stabia shipyard, with delivery scheduled for 2025. The contract has a value of approximately 410 million euros including the combat system.

THE CRUISE SHIP VIKING NEPTUNE

Not only news for the military business of the Trieste naval group. During the week, Fincantieri also saw the launch of the Viking Neptune cruise ship, the ninth in the class.

The unit will position itself in the market segment of small units, explains a note from the group led by Giuseppe Bono. Like the twin units, in fact, it will have a gross tonnage of approximately 47,800 tons, will be equipped with 465 cabins and will be able to accommodate 930 passengers on board.

Viking ships are built according to the most recent navigation regulations and equipped with the most modern safety systems, including the "safe return to port". They are also equipped with high-efficiency engines, hydrodynamics and optimized hull with consequent reduction in consumption and systems that reduce exhaust gas pollution to a minimum and meet the strictest environmental regulations.

FINCANTIERI'S RELATIONSHIP WITH VIKING

As the group recalls, Fincantieri started its relationship with Viking in 2012, trusting the shipping company that entered the oceanic cruise market as a start-up.

From the first order of two ships, today the collaboration has reached 20 units in total, including the two special cruise ships ordered from Vard, “Viking Octantis” and “Viking Polaris”, and options. This is an absolute record – underlines Fincantieri in the note – the largest number of units ordered by a single owner from a builder.

Another 9 vessels, including those in option, will set sail from the Italian plants in the coming years.

THE GROUP COMPLETES NEW FINANCING WITH CDP AND INTESA SANPAOLO

Finally, on 23 December Fincantieri finalized a new loan with Cdp and Intesa Sanpaolo. That is a “sustainability linked” construction loan for a maximum amount of 300 million euros. This is the first operation of its kind for the group led by Bono. The proceeds will be used to cover the financial needs related to the construction of a cruise ship for delivery in 2023.

The loan is defined as "sustainability linked" since it is linked to the achievement of three performance indicators contained in the 2028-2022 Sustainability Plan of the shipbuilding giant: efficient management of energy consumption, sustainability of the supply chain and employee training. Based on whether these targets are achieved or not, the agreement will trigger an upward or downward mechanism in the cost of financing for the shipbuilding group.
