Here are those who crave reconstruction in Libya

Reconstruction in Libya after the collapse of the Gaddafi regime is tempting to many. Here is what it is worth and who are the interested companies (including Italian)

To affirm that the market related to the reconstruction of Libya following the fall of the Gaddafi regime in 2011 is a market that is coveted by many nations is an incontrovertible fact.

International analysts have estimated the value that the reconstructions to be done in Libya could have at around 111 billion euros. Of course, priority will be given to airport, road and power plant infrastructures but there are several problems that make both the political and economic situation in Libya very difficult at the moment. On the one hand the internal and political struggles within the Libyan national company and on the other the uncertainties related to the electoral deadlines.

Despite this, there are several nations that, thanks to the war that has ended and thanks to the ability to carve out – very often to the detriment of Italy – spheres of influence in Libya are already planning to invest in the infrastructural sector. We are alluding to Turkey, which can count on the great importance of the Turkish council for external economic relations both thanks to its president Murtaza Karanfil and thanks to its Karanfil Group in the sector of concrete plants.

Turkey also plays an important role in the electricity infrastructure sector: just think of the Turkish industry Enka which is working on a power plant located west of Tripoli together with the German Siemens Energy which is building a solar power plant in Misrata autonomously. Of course, some of these industries have a dual mandate with President Erdigan, especially the Turkish company Rönesans Holding.

Alongside Turkey, a role that is anything but marginal is played by China, thanks to its companies such as China State Construction Engineering which intends to invest in Benghazi for a total of 2 billion dollars together with other industries that intend to invest in the very important oil sector. We refer in particular to three major Chinese industries, namely the National Pipeline Corporate, the Sinopec Group and the China National Offshore Oil Corporation.

As regards another player of great importance, namely Egypt, its main purpose, in the reconstruction sector and specifically in the context of motorway infrastructures, is the project of a motorway of about 500 km that will connect Salloum to Benghazi, for a record $ 190.6 million.

It is precisely in the sector of motorway infrastructures that Italy could play an important role: in fact, Italy intends to put in place a coastal motorway which will be about 400 km long, capable of connecting Musaid to Al Marj, in the north-east of the country for a worth 963 million euros, a project that was financed by the Berlusconi government and signed by Muammar Gaddafi in 2008. The Italian company that will be in charge of this project is Salini Impregilo Group.
