Here is the new plan of the left on Draghi and Quirinale

Paola Sacchi's note

The early election smash continues. After the reading given in some newspapers to the words spoken two days ago by Enrico Letta, fresh from the meeting with Mario Draghi, at the meeting of the Democratic Party. But, in the meantime, in addition to the wall that the same deputies and senators would make in parliament in a transversal way against the vote in 2022 – due to the reduction in the number for the referendum, the real question – another background emerges, another hypothesis of which on Startmag we had already spoken first.

Although briefly putting it among the various hypotheses cherished by a left in difficulty because for the first time, in years, it will no longer be king maker in the "battle" already underway on the Quirinale. Here it is: Draghi's resignation as premier after the approval of the budget law, to then nominate him for the Colle. This would avoid the tangle of institutional procedures to be put in place if the premier were to be launched for the Corsa al Colle, just before the crucial deadline. Hypothesis that would have been cherished in leftist circles already in recent weeks and that could be relaunched now that certain efforts, with various tricks, to go to a Mattarella bis have been greatly weakened by the clarity of the words of the Head of State himself. Sergio Mattarella recently no longer spoke citing some predecessors, opposed to a second seven-year period, but in the first person on the "conclusion of my role and my functions". This, by keeping the President out of the wishes of others, does not mean that on the left, if the situation were to screw up, some would have abandoned the idea altogether.

As for plan b on Draghi, obviously assuming that the premier intends to go to Colle, it would be a move intended to displace the center-right by a left that fears Silvio Berlusconi, certainly not a candidate, but whose name is now in fact on the "table game ". Obviously the moves of the Cav could be triggered by the fourth vote. But, however it ends, the former prime minister and president of Forza Italia has already booked a place among the king makers . And the risk of early elections if Pd, Cinque Stelle, Leu were to launch Draghi, in the manner of resigning after the budget, to try to displace the center-right? And maybe even divide it, given that the president of FdI, Giorgia Meloni, has always clearly advanced the voting option in 2022? The hypothesis of some background according to which Letta and others, such as Goffredo Bettini, could have thought about it is not far-fetched. We would no longer speak of proportional with which the leader of the Democratic Party could hardly return to Palazzo Chigi, a legitimate aspiration he has not denied so far.

But if so, how would such a hypothesis be accepted in a movement as torn apart as the Five Stars? And by Matteo Renzi, leader of IV, not given very well so far in the polls, but who in the Palazzo can, instead, play a leading role in the balance? And above all, the early vote with respect to 2023 as it would be taken by the great voters themselves, that is the parliamentarians, among whom it would be a scoop to find one who says he is willing to throw away one more year not only of salary but also and above all precious to negotiate or find, at worst, other solutions if you are no longer a candidate?

There will be many who will remain out due to the two-thirds reduction. This is why in the Democratic Party and on the left in general, there are those who have already taken into account that not only the more than ever strong risk of snipers on the Quirinale would in fact be mitigated, but also that, despite the strong fibrillations within the heterogeneous majority of "national emergency", a new government led by a personality of strict confidence of Draghi would also pass the other caudine forks of trust.

What is the key issue, beyond Letta's official statements, at the center of the conversation between the premier and the leader of the Democratic Party, received at Palazzo Chigi on the day when the CDM was preparing to launch crucial measures against the pandemic? Certainly on the agenda there are monthly meetings with all party leaders. But the fact that the interview took place on that day, in which the League, after coordinating the leader Matteo Salvini with governors and ministers, to snatch some conditions of greater openness, cannot fail to have aroused legitimate suspicions in the center-right of government, Lega and FI. Obviously Draghi has cleverly found a bank in Letta in a complex day. And objectively Letta had an opportunity to underline her role in the measures taken. In the background, however, there is always the "battle" on the Quirinale which is in full swing, contrary to the narrative, more fitting with other eras, for which the games are decided only at the last minute. Anything can happen, if we want to throw it at the obvious.

But if it were Draghi, a little difficult to imagine a personality of his caliber who goes beautifully to be shot by the snipers, and then go to elections, after having also lost his role as prime minister with all the work from him and his executive set and to be completed.

There are many hypotheses and scenarios and we would like to underline that they must always be taken, precisely because they are such, with springs. But the scenario of a Draghi who gets involved to end up shot down twice would be, yes, an urban legend. Just as it is a bit difficult to think of a center-right government, majority in the country, even according to the latest polls, including Meloni in the opposition, who would be displaced by a new ploy of the left. And this all the more with a "player" of the caliber of Cav. Unless the center-right wants to miss a historic opportunity to have a personality not coming from the left-wing area on the Hill for the first time in years.
