Here is who is closing the former Ilva in Taranto

What happens to the former Ilva of Taranto. The intervention of the general secretary Fim Cisl, Roberto Benaglia, and the national secretary, Valerio D'Alò

2021 was to be the year of the relaunch for the Taranto steel industry, with the return to 5 million tons of production, the start of investments in plants and the environment, and the rapid entry of the State into the capital of Am Investco .

Not only of all this nothing has been done, but the behavior of the Government, the company and local authorities are leading to the closure of the iron and steel center of Taranto.

We denounce the uncertainty in the action of the Government which, while declaring that it wants a "change of pace", seems to have decided to give up for the moment to give way to the recapitalization by Invitalia with the 400 million envisaged by the agreement of last December 10 pending of the sentence of the Council of State of 13 May.

We say to the Government that while waiting to give hydrogen to Taranto in 10 years, it is necessary to immediately give "oxygen" by fulfilling the financial commitments made.

To all this, we must add the serious decisions by the company to proceed, starting from next week at the steel mill 1 stop, not to restart, as announced by the ERW tube mill, not to restart the PLA2 and Treno Nastri 2 rolling plants. and to increase the number of maintenance workers in layoffs.

The scenario is aggravated by the communication of the suspension of activities to the contracting companies, including those that deal with the AIA construction sites, thus putting thousands of workers back in a climate of total uncertainty. Arcelor-Mittal is pulling the oars on the boat, a gambling game that undermines production continuity and is proving that it no longer has the conditions to manage the Group alone.

To this situation are added the continuous appeals to the judiciary and thunderous declarations of the local administrations that evidently cheer for the closure of the productions, but without concrete alternative work proposals for the territory.

All these attitudes have very little to do with an attitude of responsibility and relaunch, but they are leading straight to the closure of the former Ilva, to the loss of jobs for about 20 thousand people directly and indirectly and to the bringing to their knees of the manufacturing chains that they depend on the steel produced in Taranto, questioning the country's industrial sovereignty over steel.

The Fim Cisl will fight together with the other trade unions in countering the speculative games on this dispute that have been consumed on the skin of the workers for years.

We ask for a very urgent convocation from the Government, so that it confirms its commitments and recreates the conditions to place the company and all the actors in this dispute facing their responsibilities, guaranteeing the commitments made and the work to the steelmakers of Taranto, Genoa, Novi Ligure and all employees of the Group and related industries and the protection of those who are currently on redundancy payments
