Here's what Fincantieri and Leonardo will do underwater

Fincantieri and Leonardo have signed a Memorandum Of Understanding to define initiatives and developments related to systems, including underwater drones, for the protection of critical underwater infrastructures. The agreement comes in view of the inauguration of the national diving center.

Fincantieri and Leonardo team up in underwater.

Today the Trieste naval group and the aerospace and defense company signed a Memorandum of Understanding in the diving domain, with the aim of pooling their respective skills and capabilities in the sector. This was announced in a joint press release, specifying that the signature took place between the CEOs of the two companies, Pierroberto Folgiero and Roberto Cingolani, in the presence of the Chief of Staff of the Navy , Admiral Enrico Credendino.

Thus Fincantieri and Leonardo strengthen their collaboration, as already hoped for for some time.

Just this week Leonardo's number one, Roberto Cingolani, had announced : "Peace has broken out with Fincantieri in the sense that with our colleague Folgiero [CEO of Fincantieri] we said to each other that if the external situation is so complicated we cannot have internal competition ”. During the hearing before the Defense commission of the Chamber of Deputies, Leonardo's CEO had thus anticipated the signing of an industrial agreement.

“Our collaboration with Leonardo, already consolidated through the joint venture Orizzonte Sistemi Navali, is further strengthened with this Memorandum of Understanding in the underwater sector” commented Pierroberto Folgiero, CEO and General Director of Fincantieri.

Furthermore, the initiative was also born in light of the imminent establishment of the National Diving Centre, the joint note points out. Last spring the ministers for Maritime Policies, Nello Musumeci, and Defense, Guido Crosetto, confirmed the creation of the diving hub, an incubator under the aegis of the Italian Navy to bring together and collaborate with all the players in the world of diving: from small and medium-sized enterprises to micro enterprises, as well as large industrial groups (Leonardo and Fincantieri first and foremost but also Eni and Sparkle) as well as the world of universities and research.

All the details.

WHAT THE MOU INCLUDES BETWEEN LEONARDO AND FINCANTIERI IN UNDERWATER

In detail, the agreement between Fincantieri and Leonardo "aims at the joint development of a network of platforms and systems for surveillance, control and protection of critical infrastructures and underwater maritime areas, to respond to the needs indicated at national level and in the context of initiatives European".

Furthermore, the companies “aim to preserve and develop each other's capabilities and expertise to offer potential customers state-of-the-art, high-performance and competitive systems.”

On the other hand, as the note recalls, Fincantieri and Leonardo have collaborated for years in the naval sector, bringing their skills as world leaders respectively in the design and construction of surface ships and underwater units on the one hand, and, on the other hand, in naval combat system, the latter consisting of command and control, sensors, secure communications and data links, effectors, integrated navigation system and multi-domain modeling and simulation capabilities.

The two companies also have specific expertise in remotely piloted solutions and their complete integration into naval units.

THE PROTECTION OF NETWORKS FROM UNDERWATER THREATS

The scope of cooperation also includes the protection of strategic submarine networks, cables, communication backbones and offshore infrastructures, warning systems from underwater threats, as well as the securing of prospecting, sea-mining and extraction activities on the seabed for access to valuable mineral resources.

ENHANCEMENT OF THE ITALIAN SUPPLY CHAIN

At the same time, the two national giants also foresee "the valorization of the Italian supply chain through the support of SMEs and start-ups which will be called upon to contribute to the development of innovative technologies for the specific environment and from a multi-domain perspective".

DEDICATED OFFER FROM FINCANTIERI AND LEONARDO FOR THE UNDERWATER DOMAIN COMING SOON

So the two companies decided to team up to be leaders together in the underwater domain.

“The latter represents a universe full of opportunities on which Fincantieri intends to focus with determination: from the defense of critical underwater infrastructures to the use of drones. Our goal is to continue to innovate the sector with cutting-edge solutions” underlined Folgiero.

“The great depths of the underwater world represent a new frontier of safety, to be addressed with the development of a new generation of technologies. The approach can only be multidisciplinary, through the strong synergy of the national industry, which can boast unique, state-of-the-art skills that are also recognized at an international level. The strategic objective is to guarantee the control, surveillance, safety and prosperity of the underwater space", commented Roberto Cingolani, CEO and General Director of Leonardo, adding: "With Fincantieri we are working to build a dedicated offer to this domain, starting from our most consolidated knowledge and skills, such as sensors, manned and unmanned systems".
